Some questions about this surgery...any advice appreciated

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am currently in the process of researching to have a gastric band fitted. As I live in Northern Ireland and we don't have NHS funding it will have to be a private op.

I just have some random questions and thought I would ask in one go.

* If I choose to go somewhere like Belgium will I have to fly out there BEFORE I get the go-ahead for the Op then back again for the Op? Does it differ in the Uk....if I chose someone like Shaw Somers would I need to go a few times?

* What sort of price is expected in the UK? I don't have money to burn but want to have a good surgeon.

*Shaw Somers seems to get fabulous reports and I could go to Chichester for that...any opinions or experiences?

Thats it for now!

I personally went to Belgium for mine. I had no pre medical and received lots of information. I arrived the day before surgery had test done in the hospital. Was operated on the next day, 1 day to recover then went home again. Total stay 3 days. Since then I have had fills done in the UK, they also do them in Ireland. I cannot speak highly enough for Dr Chris and would recommend him to anyone.

The price including hotel, hospital and flights is 4000 Euros.

I went alone aswell

Hi, I went to the Czech Republic via CosmeticBliss and had the Sleeve. It was really good and I can heartily recommend it. I originally wanted the band but then after research on the internet I decided that the gastric sleeve would be better for me. It cost just over £5,000 and was worth every penny.

Cheers,

Jane

Thanks a lot for that!

I was sent some info from Dr Chris and he seems very good, when you say about flights did you book that yourself?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
