Going back to school/ recover time

Recommended Posts

I'm getting banded during christmas break of this year, and it's my senior year, & well I was wondering what the typical recovery time is in regards to returning to school. I will be doing a tech program that works with my school and getting my CNA, and the program says that you can't have a certain amount of absences otherwise, you don't get a chance to take the test to get your license. Did anyone else have their surgery while they were in school? I just don't know what to do. My surgery is around the 27th, and winter break ends the 1st! Help please!

If you aren't required to do anything physical, you will probably be fine. Many people return to work within a few days. I wouldn't have been ready for at least a week. If you normally recover easily, then you should be good to go, again, as long as you don't do anything physically that you arent' supposed to do.

Check with your surgeon, but you may have a problem. I know I couldn't lift anything over either 10 or 15lbs (can't remember which) for 4 weeks. You have to let the stitches around the port and band heal. If you are pushing and pulling on people, it may be too much. Call today and see what the restrictions are and for how long. Good luck!

I think you should be okay. I am scheduled for the 16th which is Wednesday and I have class Thursday that I really can't miss. I am figuring that I will be alright since I just have to sit there for an hour. LOL but knowing me I will be a baby and not go.

I am new to the website and all and was band on july 29 of this year.

I would really start to think about waiting for the summer break or get it done earlier on in Christmas break. Most of the time its a in and out sort of thing. Though, you are on a stricked diet for at least a good month. I have been lucky to where the only time its been hard for me is when my father eats his junk food and that is hard as heck. Being at school would really making things harder I think. I am home, at the barn, or working in my mothers office and still its hard as heck seeing people eat things you arent aloud.

I would wait for summer break or do it sooner, but thats just me. Good luck to you!

I must say that it was hard for me. It took me a few days before getting back up and going. If I had to go to school the next day I wouldnt have made it. Everytime I sat down and got back up it was disconferting. Though, I am a big baby thats probably way.

i know i wouldnt have made it cause it took a week and a half to make sure the nausea was gone but my newer nausea pills made it go away. but if i could of done it during christmas break i probably would of done it but only if it was the first day of christmas break. but im really happy i got it done over the summer because its giving time to heal before i got back to school. i start school on sept. 8th and i will be 5 and a half weeks post op (:so woohoo if i had to do it during a school day i wouldnt have done it (: and my birthday is in december :(

ugh, at least though i know what to expect right! i can't do it over christmas break because they don't do any surgeries around that time because of the holidays [my birthday falls two days after christmas] but i can do it beginning of january. when i talked to the school they said that i am most likely eligible for homeward bound. which will allow me to go to tech to take my cna class, and then i can go home and after school a teacher will come to my house and teach me math, gov and english for the two weeks or so.

how are you feeling now? & we have so much in common xD

awesome, atleast you wont be missing homework (:

my nausea came back, it came back on aug 21st midnight friday night. i had it since. other than being nauseated i feel fine. its not fair that everybody else is feeling awesome and able to go out, not me, when i have plans with a friend, i have to cancel at the last minute cause i feel nauseated and feel like i gotta puke. it sucks, i had a crappy summer, last month sucked, i dont feel like myself, i forgot what that even felt like. i never been so nauseated in my life. before the band i felt awesome, i was happy, and i was able to go places, i never felt sick or nauseated unless i was extremely, EXTREMELY nervous and thats very rare for me. ): i'd also probably feel a lot better if i never had this weird feeling in my throat (it feels like phlegm) id only had that feeling if i was sick and i dont feel sick. i saw my dr on wednesday, i showed him my incissions, they have like a rash/hives on them and he said he didnt know what was causing it he also didnt know what was causing the nausea but he said he had a patient that went home one day, ate a pickle and went back said she felt great! so he said if i needed to, eat a pickle before my meals, he also said some people have nausea for a couple of months...people say "stop blaming the band!!" what else am i supposed to blame? after all i never felt the way i do before the band, my dr said he wishes he had a magic button to make me feel better. sometimes i feel like crying cause its not fair that i have to feel this way and i always think sometimes "why did i do this to my body?"...anyways i was extremely EXCITED to go back to school, now im very scared to go back which is tuesday. i'm also scared about having embarrassing episodes like dry heaving/vomitting (which i haven't vomitted yet), having a PB, sliming, and the most embarrassing one lol i cant even say it cause its that embarrassing lol at the pre-op class your nurse should go over those things, and for my cosmetology class i need 500 hours each year which is a two year course, i'm worried i'll miss alot of school and that also scares me ): its my last year, all i wanted was a good senior year anywho sorry that was so long my dr wants to see me every two weeks, hopefully i get better, but keep in touch im glad we have a lot in common (:

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
