One month post-op...

Recommended Posts

Visited my surgeon today. He's quite happy with the 3#/wk rate I'm losing. We discussed my eating habits, the nature of problems I've had, my hunger level, and he's satisfied that I don't need a fill yet. We'll revisit this in a month or so. He's happy with the healing of my scars (there was a mild infection in one that I took care of at home, and that's looking much better).

My sleep apnea specialist dropped my apap's lower level from 10 to 4cc. I was obvious that I was hugging that line, so we need to see where I really am at. Indications are good that I could well be off that thing when I reach goal (around November, if things continue as they are).

Found out the band they used was 10cc.

I was banded 7/2/09. So far, I have lost 38 lbs. Despite minimal restriction, my first fill is on 8/4, I am feeling full with much less food. I never grazed and was a Portion Control phenom. So this thing is perfect for me.

Can't wait until I start getting more restriction.

sleep Apnea:

I have sleep Apnea also, but I do not expect to let that bipap unit go any time soon because I have a very thin brother that also has sleep apnea (albeit he is a smoker).

It is true what they say, though, that even losing 10% of your body weight can improve your quality of life. I feel much better already.

Great loss, there -- that's all post-op?

I have two cpaps -- the older (non-auto) one I use for travel. One of my cousins (whose docs want him to consider WLS) should be on a cpap. Indeed, he was on one until his kids destroyed it. I'd be tempted to hand one to him and wish him luck..

.. and better parenting.

That 38 included pre-op diet but was only on it for about 4 to 5 days. It was about 8 lbs or so. They said I'm down 31 since surgery today.

Wow, it's great you have a doctor who discusses things with you. Mine has a schedule for everyone and you just get a fill, even if you are loosing. It caused me problems, but I've changed doctors and hopefully the new one has your doctor's concept of one treatment schedule does not fit all.

Congrats on your success!

I've noticed that, and I'm continuously shocked at the apparent lack of post-op support provided to patients I've seen here. Group Health's program *requires* you enroll (about $1400 out-of-pocket, IIRC) into a nutritional counselling program that starts two months before surgery -- they won't even schedule until you're enrolled.

Actually, my surgeon was the founding surgeon of the program here, and having the nutritional counselling included was his requirement for starting the bariatric surgery program at all.

I have quick email turnaround with them, can call my nutritional counsellor as needed, and they schedule calls on top of that to ensure some minimum level of contact.

They're apparently getting inspected this month, to qualify as a Bariatric Center of Excellence so that they can take on Medicare patients.

I can't recommend their program enough; I've actually been cautioning folks who are looking into WLS to check about the pre- and post-op support provided, simply because I see so many people not getting it when they have obvious need.

Well, that didn't last long. Shortly after that visit my hunger jumped incredibly. Just got a fill this morning.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
