Constipation....need help please!!

Recommended Posts

You should not use psyllium husk w/lap band, same reason to not use any of the Fiber powders it will stretch out your new stomach, same as any carbonated drinks! Why would we want to mess up what we paid so much for and have put our bodies through hell for! Talk to someone who has done this, it could mean another surgery or no weight loss!

I don't know who told you this info (about "fiber powders will stretch out your new stomach") but I believe it is blatantly wrong. You might want to confirm with your doc.

What stretches your pouch is overeating.

Fiber is better for your digestive system than taking weekly milk of mag doses. Most healthy females need about 25-28g of fiber a day, men a little more, no one "needs" milk of magnesia.

It's safest to ask your doc what to do for Constipation, and do it.

carbonation doesn't generally stretch the stomach either...it just causes gas which is really painful for most of us, especially in the first months post op.

The nutrionist told me I could take Benefiber because I specifically asked this question. When I have lost weight on my own it has always been in part with me taking benefiber. (I hate that every Doc has their own thing it can get very confusing. I just stop listening and go with what mine has told. Otherwise I would be crazier than I already am!!!)

I have IBS. Constipation, for years, has been a problem for me. I used to take stool softeners every night. I dreaded going to the bathroom. Even w/the stool softeners, it was still painful.

In Dec I decided to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle. I am not suggesting you change your lifestyle. However, you may want to up your fiber. Choose stuff like oatmeal in the tub. oatmeal is has soluble and insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber is what pushes stuff through your colon.

Up fruits and veggies. They have insoluble fiber, as well. If you drink smoothies, use frozen fruit instead of ice. This way you get nutrition and fiber.

Stuff like benefiber is good. But it's Water soluble. Remember to get the stuff w/insoluble fiber, as well.

Hope you feel better soonh

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
