Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor Need a mentor

Recommended Posts

Help! I am starting to freak out about my surgery on August 4th! I have been so excited about getting my band and I still am but now I am starting to have a huge fear of failure! My husband (my soul mate and best friend all wrapped up into one!) is a great support and I know that he will continue to be after the surgery. My best girlfriend had the surgery 18 months ago and has had great success. So, I also have support there.

I am 40 years old, (current weight 243, height 5' 5", BMI 40) Christian mother of a beautiful 8 year old daughter and a wonderful 5 year old (step)son. As I said earlier, I am married to the love of my life (we were married in June 2008. We dated for 2 years 23 years ago and were reunited in 2006). My life/family is awesome and I want to be healthy & active and to be around to watch my kids grow up!

Thank you!

Just checking in....did I do something wrong or does it take a few days to get matched up to a mentor? I just noticed other threads posted after mine are getting replies. Thought maybe I missed something I was supposed to do. :)

I hope you didn't have to wait to long for a response. Maybe people are jealous of your super good relationship with your DH! Justing kidding! Humor keeps me going.

Support will help for sure. I think it all depends on your mind set. The beginning for me was easy I didn't have much restriction but was losing weight and I was finally becoming mindful of what I put in my mouth! After the 3rd fill I am seeing consistent weight loss and a big decrease in appetite but I also get stuck, pb and slime. If you don't know what these are research. They are VERY unpleasant. but if you follow the rules to a T it won't happen. You have to really want this and you will feel it was all worthwhile when you get to a healthy weight and have more energy and be happier. Don't forget though everything comes with a cost. It's no free ride trust me. E-mail me any time Margomack29@yahoo.com

Also I should say that the surgery was a bit more intense than I thought. I was not expecting that. Everyone is different though and you are younger than me. Having gone though a pregnancy as you have an birthing helps prepares you. I had an out patient surgery which in my opinion was pretty gutsy. I wished i had a night in the hospital for recovery. Hope this helps? Best to you !

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
