I am 7 days post op. Wow! This has been so much more difficult than I thought it would be. But, I am doing everything I am supposed to do -except eating a variety of foods. I have been consuming only broth and cream of Tomato Soup. For some reason, I do not want to eat cold food. And when I say I do not want to...it is weird...kind of like I Really don't want to and I do not want to throw up! I've been avoiding the other foods up to now, because I am basically healing and my priority has been to just get by, but today I am going to try to make myself at least sip on something else.

I can have fat free skim milk, slim fast, powdered Protein Drink, broth, strained creamy Soups, juice, Popsicles (make my stomach hurt), v-8 and carnation instant Breakfast.

I think slim fast is too high in carbs and not enough Protein. Before surgery, I had changed to low carb slim fast, but at the very end; I was nauseous and throwing up when I smelled it.

SO, can anyone relate or give me advice on how you got through this? I have one more week at this stage.

PS>I plan to heat some apple juice and put in a cinnamon stick so that it will be like hot cider...AND I am following my doctor's advice...but I wonder why my diet is SO high in carbs and most others are not???

Do you have the chocolate carnation instant breakfast? You could like heat it up and it would be sort of like hot chocolate.< /p>

I think the information I got with my surgery mentioned that cold foods do bother some people. Maybe your doctor wanted you on carbs because Protein takes longer to break down and digest?? (just guessing).

Anyway, the warm apple juice and cinnamon stick sounds YUMMY!

Good luck, the liquid stage is a beast, but worth it in the end!

I don't know what your doc prescribed for a preop diet, but if you are supposed to have Protein, try to get some more in. One thing I was allowed to have was Anderson - Erickson chocolate milk with Splenda - no sugar added (this may be a regional product only). I would heat that up and it was like hot chocolate for me. I also liked it cold with chocolate protein powder and just a smidgen of malt powder to make it taste like a real treat.

The initial liquid foods are so boring and difficult and I couldn't wait for the mushy stage but don't get too scared. I was so afraid to go to solids thinking I would gain weight but I didn't. I did exactly what my surgeon said to do and I am still losing weight. I will have my first fill 08-04-09. Good Luck and hang in there.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
