I think I screwed up

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I was 21 days post op. I am still on mushies and doing quite well, however I decided to get cocky yesterday and cooked baby carrots real soft. I kept them whole and used salt and pepper for seasoning. I had my usual mashed potatoes but decided to have a bite of carrot and then back to potatoes..etc. I think I must have eaten too fast or maybe did not chew that darn carrot because in mid bite I felt like a piece of food was stuck on my "adams apple". I kept trying to swallow it down and then tried to clear my throat but nothing was budging. I had a slight panic feeling and then retired the rest of my dinner. This was at 7:30. At 10:00 I was starting to get some pain in my band area but since the lump went away I figured the food must be moving along. I drank some Water hoping to help the food. Well.. I woke up at 12:30 with some pains around the lower part of my band area. I decided to get on the computer and google to see if it was the infamous food stuck feeling. I went back to bed unsure and woke up feeling almost completely relieved but not quite perfect. Any suggestions? BTW- I placed myself back on super soft mushies today. I am a bit scared of that "feeling"

It does sounds like you had something stuck and you did all the right things.

Glad you are feeling better this morning.

I would say you were stuck and maybe had spasms around your stoma. You most likely will be swollen because of this incident. Make sure to take it easy on your band the next few days.

Make a call to your doc's office to let them know what happened and for advice.

Thanks! I did call today and they think I swallowed too big of a bite of mashed potatoes and it caused esophagus spasms. I was hurting until this afternoon and then ate a pudding and a few hours later I SLOWLY ate my mashed potatoes. I feel pretty good now but I really do think I am a little swollen as I feel like I am post-op week 2 instead of week 4. Thanks for the answers

You might want to consider switching to sweet potatoes. They are really yummy. I use Promise, Splenda Brown Sugar and cinnamon on mine.

I find I have trouble with white potatoes, in any form, wanting to stick on me. I also struggle with most any white carb, rice, noodles, bread... My mom's doc told her, "if it's white it aint right". ha ha

Yeah I bought the splenda brown sugar and sweet potatoes last weekend. I did not like them. I never have been a fan of sweet potatoes. I had been eating the other potatoes just fine for 2 weeks. I just ate too big of a bite too fast. I am all better now and have had the mashed potatoes already just fine. I ate them extra slow though..lesson learned! Thanks for the input.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
