New to Lapbandtalk.com -Banding Scheduled 8/5/09

Recommended Posts

I'm new here and excited about my banding procedure which is in just eight days. I've done all the diets and exercise plans over the years and lost/regained the weight. Diets work but I have never been able to keep my weight off. I'm hoping this will be the discipline I need to stay within my limits to maintain a healthy weight.

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arkansas, TrueBlue Plus PPO plan, and it will pay for my procedure because my BMI is over 40 and my doctor recommended as medically necessary. Dr. John Baker is my surgeon (a strict one he is) and I feel good about my experience with him so far.

Dr. Baker requires two weeks of Meal Replacement therapy (Protein shakes) prior to surgery, and I just completed the first seven days. I have lost eight pounds in one week, but could never do this to lose all 120 pounds I need to lose! I'm determined to keep the commitment as required for my surgery, though.

Any suggestions from those who have "been there, done that" are welcome. If there are things you know of that make the post-op experience better, please let me know. I'm a little nervous about how I will feel immediately after the procedure and for the following few days. But whatever I face, I'm up to the challenge! I'm ready to conquer my lifelong battle! :smile2:

Just wanted to say welcome! Sounds like you already have a winning attitude! Good luck! :smile2:

(Oh and take some lip balm for post op; they give you something to dry you up and your lips will be miserable!)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
