Liver diet? Should I be doing that?

Recommended Posts

The only rules my doc said were not to eat or drink anything after midnight the day before surgery. What if he gets in there and cant get past my liver? I weight 265 (down from 276!) I had really good results with my blood work they said everything was perfect. What is the liver diet so maybe I can do some sort of that just to make sure?????

Trust your doc if you trust him. Not everyone has a liver large enough to stop surgery and in fact it's pretty rare. Believe me, if your surgeon thought you needed to shrink your liver before the surgery, he'd tell you!!!

Just brace yourself to be strong post op; it's tough to follow that post op diet but vital. :smile2:

If you are REALLY worried about the liver thing, ask your surgeon so he can reassure you.

Seems to me that it certainly can't hurt. Mine was 10 days protien shake for Breakfast and lunch and lean and green (4 oz meet and a cup of veggies) for dinner.

Good luck to you!

It is my understanding that not everyone has to be on a liver shrinking diet. I believe it depends on your BMI. Friends of mine, husband and wife both had lapband surgery from the same surgeon as myself. The husband who was 400+ pounds had to be on a liver shrinking diet pre-op but the wife did not. She was 280 pounds. I had a BMI of 53 and did have to be on a liver shinking diet. If this is something you would like to do, ask your surgeon if it is alright for you to do this and ask for the info.

I was BMI of 37 and my surgeon had me do it. It's likely personal perference, but the way I see it, better safe than sorry.

If your surgeon does not SPECIFICALLY tell you to follow a diet for "the liver", then don't.

You would likely know by now if there was a liver problem that needed some form of intervention, medically.

Simply do EXACTLY what the Dr told you to do, and don't do anything else. Very often diets that people go on to specifically impact one organ or function can have ANOTHER (sometimes negative) effect on an entirely different organ or function.

So don't mess with it; do what the Doc said.

I agree with HH! Besides, who willingly tortures him/her self? Those liver shrink diets are harsh!

Ask your surgeon if you're worried, as I said...but you are kind of in his/her hands during the preop and postop phase. You need to communicate with him, follow his rules. You'll make it through and heal well that way!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
