banding Tuesday what if my liver is not shrunk enough?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I went to a pre-op class a few weeks ago. In the class they told of a gal who did not follow the pre-op diet and when the doctor opened her up her liver was way to large to cont the procedure. I have been on the pre-op diet for nearly 2 wks. I have followed it nearly to the T. I have a diffused fatty liver and I have a fear my liver will still be to big to finish the procedure. Is this a problem and what are the chances of this happening:sad:?

It happened to me. However my doc said I was the first that he was unable to band. I didn't follow his diet perfectly and lost 15 pounds anyway! BUT not the right 15. You should discuss your worries with your surgeon. How much have you lost? and you said you followed it "nearly to a T"...what did you do to cheat? That would be something to discuss with him.

Is it more likely the more ya weigh the more chance ya have of having a fatty liver. What makes some livers fat and some not? and is there a test to find out? Im very obese and Im afraid theyll open me up and find a fatty liver and Im self pay so I cant afford it

What is a diffused fatty liver ? I remember when I had my diseased gall bladder out that they said my liver had was enlarged and had higher liver enzymes in my blood meaning that my liver was a fatty liver. THey didnt have any problem with the operation though... I told my surgeon about this and had lab work 2.5 weeks ago but no one has called and told me any results... has this happened to anyone else?

I have been worried about the same thing even though I have followed my 10 day liqued diet perfectly. My surgeon told me the same story of the women waking up without her band. He said that has only happened a couple of times to him so I don't think it is very common. The surgeon also told me if the liver is a little larger he may have to do more incisions. I'm sure you will be fine if you have done well on your pre-op diet. Good luck to you!

you guys are so helpful!! Your the greatest. We'll I was banded Tuesday 28th and nothing was said about my liver. You are right along with our extra weight I do believe that the liver would have more of a chance to become "Fatty" I was diagnosed with the diffused fatty liver while in the ER with Kidney Stones.. the perfect fit good-looking doctor talked to me for 10mins about it telling me if I didn't do anything to resolve the issue I would be dead in less then 10 yrs.

I also believe our bariatric doc put us on a high Protein Shake diet for this reason. I was such nerves when I wrote this thread. I get in a tendency to over analyze everything. I guess if you follow the diet the best you can, you cant do better then that. Thanks again and I hope this thread helps peoples peace of minds:laugh:

As in RestlessMonkey's case, even when it's followed there can still be a chance of the liver being too enlarged. Typically, the more you weigh, the bigger the chance of your liver being enlarged. Some surgeons base the length of your pre-op diet on your BMI. Since my BMI was 37, I only had to do a 3-day pre-op diet versus his standard 2 week diet and was fine. There were other women in my class that ranged from 350-450 pounds, and they were required to do a 4 week diet.

There is a reason they make us do those nasty pre-op diets, not just to torture us lol

Unforgettable...I didn't follow my doc's diet; at least not the 1st time. I did my "own" diet because, Hey, I'm a professional dieter! (yes I am making fun of me)

This is what I think....that happened and it's a good thing because I re-evaluated my "knowledge" and realized I needed to listen to my surgeon...question him of course if in doubt but otherwise LISTEN to him. I'm not really a know-it-all (I may sound like it sometimes but I know I'm not) but I am mature, smart, and used to figuring things out for myself. So I thought I could do a diet that I would enjoy more but I would lose weight. And I DID lose 15 pounds. BUT I didn't know about the liver shrink part. Why? I didn't ask my doc "WHY THIS DIET" I just assumed it was for general weight loss. NOT.

SO mostly I learned (once again although by now you'd think I'd have known it) NEVER ASSUME.

THAT Is how I learned that for the post op diet it is VITAL to follow it because it is for healing and even one BITE of food can cause the stomach to churn and THAT can rip the old stitches and band loose.

Most of us grow up occasionally cheating on diets...it's a way of life for many obese. I had to learn (and will always share) that the preop one is important to follow but the post op one is almost IMPERTIVE to follow.

They shouldn't call it a "diet" They should call it "your post op healing prescription" or something. :crying:

If I hadn't done my own diet I probably would have lost more, lost it from my liver, and gotten the band the first time. BUT I did what he told me post op and am glad of that; it was a hard lesson I learned but I think (hope) I learned it.

Sorry I misunderstood you. But I'm so glad to hear your story, and so others can hear it as well.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
