week 2 and can only get some liquids down

Recommended Posts

Hi: I was banded on 7/17, and couldn't even swallow my spit for 2 days. Ended up in the hospital on 7/18 for 36 hours on IV fluids and steriods to maybe reduce the swelling. Then thedoc drew out 2 cc from the new band and at least I coild drink Water. On Tues. 7/21 I started protrein shakes, and maybe can get 3 down a day. But today 7/25 I tried a little yogurt for brealfast and applesauce for lunch and feel like crap. They told me week 2 you should tried some puree foods, like Soup through a blender, but I can't get even enough water down between meals. I told the doc to take the damm thing out if this how I am going to feel. Any advice or simular stories. THANKS:confused:

I am feeling your pain. I'm currently in the hospital. I'm 9 days post-op and can't keep anything down. Monday my Doc is going to go in and do a EGD to see what's going on in my stomach. Keep me posted on how things are going for you and if I find any answers on Monday, I'll let you know! Good luck!

I was banded 06-17-09 and never had that feeling but I was banded empty so I have no saline yet. My first fill is 08-04-09 and I will be anxious to see what happens. I was under the understanding that you should be empty to allow your body time to heal before you get any fill. I have read some threads on here where people do get banded with saline already in the band but I still wouldn't think it should be bad enough that you would have those problems. I am so sorry you are having a such a bad experience. Hopefully your doctor can help you and you will begin to love life with the band as I do. Please keep after your doctor until he/she gets it right.

I was starving 2 weeks after my surgery so I can't relate!! i had the opposite problem - I could and did eat everything which is BAD!!! You don't lose weight when you eat too much period - with or without the band. The fill I have no is holding me well and I am happy - just hang in there and you will get it right, too.... sorry you can't eat!! a new me

Hopefully you are getting in some Water - you don't want to get dehydrated again! I would go in and demand that the doc does something right away. You shouldn't have to wait if you are having a hard time just getting water down.

I hope that the doc gets you in ASAP and helps you figure this thing out. No fun coming out of surgery and feeling that horrible! I didn't have the same problem you did after surgery, but I did keep little 1oz plastic "shot" glasses full with water, so I would remember to drink. Maybe the small size would help???

Hope you feel better soon - keep us posted on your progress.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
