Band Has slipped Upwards

Recommended Posts

Good Morning:

:crying:so - I have not posted on here before but i have read a lot of the posts - i have had my band since July 13, 2008 - at first I loved it and i have managed to lose about 60 pounds - but since March of this year - i have lost nothing - had a fill - had terrible coughing, reflux, choking, vomiting, sliming (all only at night) had a defill - waited 5 weeks - had a slight fill -immediately restarted the night coughing - did not let it get so bad - had a defill. As soon as I have a defill I am perfectly fine. Still have a bit of restriction but no reflux or anythin. On the 15 of July I had a barium swallow and it shows that the band has slipped upwards and is sitting at the join of the esophogus to the stomach - and the stomach is below the band in it entirety :biggrin: - i am not in any pain. My question at this time is has anyone else experience this kind of slip and what are my best options at this time. I am really leaning towards a removal because I am afraid it may slip again.

Thanks

I just found out today that my band has also slipped upward. I assume that this is not a "typical" slip. I cannot find much on the web about it. I'm going to my band surgeon next week but I'm so curious to know what my options are going to be.

I am not 100% sure but i think slipping upwards is the way that it normally happens.

Hi all:

I think that the band slipping upwards from what I understand is rare. My band is sitting where the esopogus joins the stomach and usually the stomach will slip up through the band and then it is further down on the stomach.

I am after much thought and reflection leaning towards a revision to the sleeve. I know that without something to restrict my eating I will be back where I started in no time. At this point I have zero restriction and find myself eating way to much of everything - which is why I had the band in the first place. I guess at this point I could have the band repositioned but I have been told that if your band has slipped once that you will be prone to that again. I am a self paying Canadian and it is becoming very hard to find someone to do fills for us here in Alberta - so I am thinking maybe I should just go for a sleeve and be done with continuing expenses and the possibility of a slip and an another trip and surgery :thumbup:

My band has also slipped upwards and I have decided to have it removed on Tues. Sept 1. I spent 6 months making this decision and wish I had made it sooner. I am scared that I will regain my weight again as I have always been able to lose weight but I cannot keep it off.

I think my band slipped on the 4th day post op. I lost 20lbs. By the end of the 2nd surgery that will be about $1,000.00 per pound. Hope there are better solutions out there. I wish my original surgeon would have done a flouroscopy when the problems first occurred (2 years ago) instead of placing blame on my compliance.

I just found out today that my band has slipped upwards also. My have changed insurance co's since being banded almost 2 yrs ago. I went on Kaiser thru my hubbys work in Feb. asked for a baritric Appt. and after alot of BS and talking to more pople then I cared to, I was told I would be contacted. Well I was, 7 months later for an appt. I went to it last week, after talking to him, he scheduled an upper GI as I requested, becasue in the last few months or so I have gotten stuck more then I ever have, and it feels different. So I have my upper GI test, and sure enough its slipped up. No small pouch at all in there. So my main problem is, my husbands work is changing insurance providers, and as of Oct. 1st I wont have Kaiser anymore. Thanks alot Kaiser for taking 7 months to schedule appts. $#$#$^

re: "My question at this time is has anyone else experience this kind of slip and what are my best options at this time. I am really leaning towards a removal because I am afraid it may slip again."

I believe that is what has happened to mine. I am in the period now of "What ARE the options" and "what is the BEST option?"

I find mine still gives a LOT of help along with episodes of distress/dysphagia as you describe.

I am not in a hurry to make ANY surgical changes pending a thorough clinical investigation.

My own surgeon moved away 24 months ago and I've had a series of new replacements. I did have a complete GI recently completed that give a TON of additional data for my pending consult.

1) Don't panic;

2) Schedule a consult with your specialists;

3) review what THEIR recommendations are;

4) review what it is that YOU want to do;

5) AFTER non-emotional reflection on clinical realities and best choices, you will have more information upon which to base YOUR decision.

Adjustable; repairable; replaceable; removable. Those are part of the reason *I* chose the Band in the first place.

Please keep up posted.

What ever came of your slip???

My band slipped too and I am going in for a replacement band on Oct. 7th. My insurance is paying, because it needs to be fixed. I have 50 pounds more to lose and I can't wait for it to be replaced. I just hope it works well, because it worked well the first time for a year. Now hopefully it will work again.

Good luck with your decisions.

On September 8th, I went in for a fill under fluoro. I had been at a prolonged plateau and the nurse practitioner wanted to do one under fluoro to see if she noticed anything going on. Plus, I had gained 4.5 pounds since April. I ended up not getting a fill because the x-ray showed that my pouch was very swollen and she said that my band was tilted and that it had possibly slipped. I am not sure if there are varying degrees of slippage or what. But she told me that your pouch width should not extend over the band and mine had.

I was banded in Jan. 2007 so I have the old 4cc band. She took all of my saline out-3.5cc's at the time. It really hurt me to see all my saline go down the drain but I had to face reality that I did it to myself by not following the rules and watching my portions. She constantly preached this with every visit but i thouth i was doing ok. I was terrified that I would have to have more surgery or have it taken out and end up gaining all of my weight lost back. But, she told me to watch my portions & try do liquids to give my band a chance to "rest" and fall back in to place. I had appt to go back in 3 weeks which was just 9/29 to do another fluoro which would determine my fate. I really tried to do all liquids but it became very difficult and I did graduate up to soft/mushy foods with an occasional bad choice. I tried to watch my portions. I was so terrified to go back for the appt. because I was thinking the worse. I did not weigh during the 3 week wait. Needless to say, i had lost 5.5 pounds in 3 weeks. She said that my band looked good and she even gave me back 2.0cc of saline. So I am considering this my second chance to get it right and get to my personal goal of 195.

hi i posted i had troubles with my band ...and i had to unfill instead of 6cc ..there is 3.5 cc only in (16 cc ) band

after barium meal .. the rediologist stated that the band might have slipped up and there is no effect or reflux under xray

i called my surgeon he said that the 20 mm pouch will only appear under considerable condtriction

so now i am concerned does upward slip correct itself or i have to reposition or the whole thing that the small pouch didnt appear on the barium x ray becausse its loose and i just need restriction i am posting this maybe someone has answers for me

      Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

        Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

        Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
