I was just told that my Vitamin D is low. Anyone else with this issue. If so, please share with me. I am saddened by this. I thought I was doing everything right to get off meds and now I have to add another pill. I am really sad.

Any advise would be helpful.

One of the best things you can do for low Vitamin D levels is to go out into the sun for 10-15 minutes a day. Definitely take care of your skin with a low SPF - the goal is not to burn, but to expose yourself to a moderated amount of UV each day.

OMGosh, thank you for the information. I hate the sun and I try to stay out of it as much as possible. I guess now I will take some time to try and make the most of it.

Yep.

"Bunz" is right.

Get a little more sunlight, if you can. Many people don't realize that they NEED the sushine for many reasons. And it's not just to get a "golden tan".

BUT,....remember that Vitamin supplementation is a WAY OF LIFE for many WLS patients, and that includes those with the Band. You may be able to dump most of the rest of your pills and medications, but you might have to take some Vitamins at some point as well.

But try the sunshine first!:cool2:

in a 24 hour period i read in various nutrition magazines that many women have low Vitamin D and that it contributes to slow weight loss! i ordered liquid vitamin D3 from luckyvitamin.com and i put it in my morning Protein Shake. i also ordered liquid Calcium and add that as well. the two work together for absorption.

It is quite common to have a Vitamin D deficiency. Most surgeons/strongly recommend a Calcium supplement. Many of them come with Vit D as well (generally 400-600 IU per dose),a s it helps the body absorb the Calcium. Depending on how much calcium you intake through other sources, women should take 1000 - 1500 mg calcium p/day. This should not be taken all at once, as the body cannot absorb more than 500 mg of calcium at a time.

2 years ago I had a severe vitD deficiency that was causing me a lot of other health related issues. When we found out I was put on a RX of like a million units every other day for 4 weeks then a daily dose of 4000u every day then after a few months it was creeping back to normal and I could do 2000u a day. At the time of my surgery it was normal and now I just use my Viactive Multivitamin and if I start to feel any joint pain or "weirdness" like I felt before I will "pop" an extra pill that day... But once it got normal I felt 100% better and never would have thought that was the problem--

I live in Florida and dont "lay out" so to speak but I did make a more positive effort to get some more sun as well....

hey sugga-I JUST got back from Walgreens picking up my prescrip for VitD--the internist I had to see for my band gave me a prescrip for 50000 units-a little green capsule I will take daily-for 3 months. I am NOT a nurse, but I'm a social worker who works on a home health team with MANY doctors and nurses-Vit D levels is a big thing now days--they get levels of this on all our patients-and check this regularly. The MDs on my work team feel that having the right level of this is good for many reasons. They also say that research is showing that having the right level is a good idea-it can make you feel better overall, and can help with cognition. I'm sure the nurses out there can write in a list them all. I don't know if you are like me, but I avoid the sun as much as I can, so I not surprised my level was a little low. I hope this isn't too much personal stuff, my point is-I think it's good you MD is following this-I just took the pill. It is small and not expensive(thank God).

I started taking the same Vitamin d pill yesterday. I do hate the sun. But, if it"ll help me I can take 10-15 minutes worth. Thank you for all your helpful information. Good luck on you journey!!

Depending on where you live in the country Vitamin D is very common in not only obese people but in people that might see the sun 5 days a year. LOL not really but it seems that way in upstate N.Y. The deficiency has been linked with everything from cancer to autoimmune diseases. Take your Vits and give yourself the best chance at a healthy life!!

Actually 15 min of sun twice a week or so is enough! :smile2:

And my D is low too (I avoid the sun) so my doc said to take D3. I take Vitamins anyway so 1 more pill is no biggie. But sun on your hands and face will help your body produce D.

      Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

        As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life.
