Fresh out of Operating room

Hello all , Im new to the forum.

I was banded on 7-20-09 by Dr. Geroge Fielding in NYU

I am a 29 yo male .

This is the first time I ever underwent any type of surgery and it was kinda what I expected.

I am taken back by the amount of pain that I have. I have two incisions. One s on my belly button where I assume the port and forceps were used for and another hole up in middle of my chest. The belly button is vereey very sore and the one mid chest is smaller just about an inch by an inch bandage covers it completly.

I was told I had a hietal hernia and it was repaired while i was under.

I have a tremdounous amount of gas pain and discomfort and lots of noises coming from my belly. Also one thing i am noticing is a am having cramps all over my body. Knees legs arms elbows.. Could this be dehydration or maybe lack of potassium ? Ive been drinking sport drinks and chewable vitamins. I had a Protein Shake this morn and chicken broth. I feel no hunger, actually feel bloated from too much drinking but when i walk around it goes away. Im going for a walk right now to help with gas pain and I already had my first bowel movement this morn. total diarreha.

Is this really normal ?

I am allowed to shower today so I am happy about that and tomorrow i can remove my bandages.

The pain you are describing is completely normal as is the belly noises,... the only pain that gets my attention is the pain spasms all over your body. i am glad to hear that you are moving around as much as possible... you want to help with the gas, AND, prevent clotting. call your surgeon about the other pain though. this would concern me if you were sedentary most of the time, but you say your not.

you will have more pain having had the hiatal hernia repaired than most so you are describing things bang on.

do feel better soon and best of luck!

Personally I got a LOT of relief with Gas-x strips. They seemed to help my body absorb and 'deal' with the after surgery gases. Also, a cold pack was my best friend for the first 4 days, gave me tons of relief.

Hope you feel better soonest, don't avoid your pain meds.

muscle cramps?? i think you know your body.. it sure does sound like dehydration and/or potassium like you mentioned. are you sneaking caffeine in there anywhere?

ring the doc

Ug, yes . . the gas pain! Horrible stuff! That's interesting that Dr. Fielding is doing the 2 incision surgery with one through the bellybutton. I go to Dr. Ren (his wife, who shares his office) for my follow-up work (had my surgery in Mexico with Dr. Rumbaut.

I had the 2-incision surgery, too, but the main incision is about 2 inches long, so it's not quite as attractive as if it was hidden in my bellybutton!

Be sure to say hi if you see me in the waiting room at the Dr's office. You'll be feeling much better in a day or two. Congratulations on your surgery!

Catherine

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
