5 days post op and sharp pain on L when I breathe in

Recommended Posts

So my surgery was 7/16 and ever since I have a unbearable sharp pain on my left side under my ribs when I try and take a deep breath. Well since it hurts so bad Im stuck taking short lil breaths. Is this normal or has anyone else experienced this? Its ONLY when I try and take a deep breath.

I do remember being uncomfortable and feeling like my chest was really heavy. I think you should contact your surgeon and ask about the sharp pain. It doesn't sound like anything to mess around with.

This seems to be a common thing with me and many of my friends some doctors tie the port to the muscle under the rib cage which caused the sharp pain when breathing and healing. I would call the doctor if you feel it gets worse. However I can say I know at least 4 others who also had the same issue. Just seems to be a common thing.

I would ck with the doc just make sure and ease your mind.

I had the same thing. I couldn't take a deep breath for at least 1-2 weeks after surgery. Did you have a hiatal hernia repair? I did. Sometimes, I couldn't even catch my breath. Don't worry it will get better!

I had the same pain. Turns out the nerve endings got caught in the mesh around the port. I had to have another surgery to remove the port from the left side and relocated to the right side. This time the Doctor sewed the port into the muscle. I still experience pain on the left side but nothing like I did before the port was relocated. I would speak to your doctor right away.

you bet i had it...for a solid week. just like karibensea stated, the port is sutured beneath the skin...(mine to the left of my belly button) to the muscle of the abdominal wall. this is what i learned, and my surgeon confirmed, was causing the sqeezing pain and inability to breathe deeply. exercize your breathing by forcing those slow deep breaths from time to time...i think that helped mine to finally start healing.

of course a check with your surgeon is a way to confirm all this and be sure it is nothing more serious than this.

good luck, but i truly believe it will get betterfor you!!
