I was told that after surgery I will be going home on mushies. I wonder why. I mean I have heard alot of people on here that have to be on Clear Liquids for a week then another week of liquids but more like protien shakes. Then on to mushies. I am kind of scared. Should I follow what doc says or should I dio a week of liquids before starting mushies. I know everyone says "Listen to your Doctor" but it just sound so different from what other doctors say. I dunno. Can someone shed some light on this for me. Thanks, I only have 8 day to go...WooHoo

Always do what your doctor says. There are as many ways to do it as there are doctors. You might want to express your concerns to them ahead of time so they can reassure you. Do they have a nutritionist that you could touch base with?

talkalot1981,

I was just thinking the same thing! I actually came onto the sight looking for a thread regarding this. It seems as if most peoples Docs have advised them to stay on liquids for 14 days post op. My doc has advised 5 days of liquids post op, then 10 days of pureed foods, and 10 days of soft food.

I'm a week post-op and have justed started the mushies. Everything is good so far. I have my first visit on Wednesday. I would do what the doc says as of now, but make sure to ask about it.

Good Luck

Hi there! My surgeon has been different than most of those I have heard of on this sight. For some examples:

- I never had to do all liquids on pre-op (even though his nutritionist gave me a liquid diet to follow) doc says "just do low carb and lw fat, i want your liver shrunk"

- I never had to do clear liquids post op.. the day i left the hospital he told me to go get myself a milkshake:)

- today was my first postop appt with him. i was expecting going to mushies, he said "try mushies first, but also slowly start trying to ease your way into regular foods right after. If you tolerate it, keep going, just pay attention to being full" :Dancing_wub:

-he also informed me today that he filled me during surgery so i will feel restriction immediately. most surgeons don't fill til 4 weeks or so after surgery. he stated he used to not fill during surgery, but he feels he wants to give the port a full 6 weeks to heal before poking it...so he fills at surgery so his patients don't have to wait 6 weeks for a 1st fill :Dancing_wub:

I am so very happy with my surgeon's style...and it appears he has a good reason for doing it his own particular way based on his knowledge and experience. So definately follow your surgeon's advice... he is making these decisions based on what he has found to be best for his patients and for your healing and adjustment.

Besides... liquids suck!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone seems to be on the same page. If you have concerns, talk to your Doc. He/She will be able to explain why they are going with their plan of action or they may change it up for you depending on what you need. I did Protein Shakes for two weeks because I couldn't get anything else down. My Doc originally wanted me to eat "mushies" :bored: Just go with what feels comfortable for you. Drinking a Protein Shake or eating pudding..... kinda goes hand in hand. Good luck!!

broth sucks but if u go to your fav. spot and ask from the broth from the Soup only,.. its so much better. I get wonton soup with broth only and i go to three brothers and get the wedding soup broth only and u can get matza ball soup no broth,...

Every doctor's protocol is so different. For example, I was back to regular food 4 days post op. Not all foods. I can't have beef, pork, raw veggies, grains. Basically I can have chicken, turkey, seafood, cooked veggies and fruits. I actually got a lecture for having a Protein shake. She wants me to have food I can chew. I say trust your surgeon's program and follow instructions. If you have questions, ask. They can tell you why they follow a certain protocol.

Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
