I was just wondering... are there any patients of his posting here? Would love to start conversing with you, see how you're doing! Maybe even meet up with one another at the support group meetings. ^_^

Hi there! I am not a patient of Dr. Kouras, but found your post and wondered if you had found any support groups for us patients in Sac. I have been looking and looking and have been unable to find any groups in the area. I am set to be banded in December and have so many questions and feelings about the whole experience. thanks!!

Hey mommy!

Congrats on your upcoming surgery! I will be willing to answer any questions you might have. I have been through a lot with my band, and I would really like to give you some personal experience that you might find useful.

Dr. Koura has a support group but I don’t really attend. It tends to be fuller of his gastric bypass patients. While I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just not helpful to anything I’m really going through.

Best wishes!!

Hi My name is Troy! I had lapband surgery on 12-7-09. I have so far lost 35lbs. and my blood sugars are almost normal. I am off half of my medicines. I was taking 7 different medications daily before i had the surgery. Now i only take a small dose of glyburide for my diabetes and my blood pressure is perfect. I haven't had any problems with the band thus far. I can eat small amounts of solid food but i faithfully stick to the diet plan. I was very pleased with Dr. Koura and his staff. I thought they did a wonderful job of preparing and educating me on the procedure before hand. I will get my first fill on2-4-10. I am very pleased with my progress and highly recommend the lapband surgery to those who are overweight with health problems.

Hi Troy…  That is great! Yes I agree, Dr. Koura and his staff are really great when it comes to preparation. He is also a very conservative filler and that is actually a good thing.

I have a fill scheduled for 2/12 – one week later from you. I’m sure you will see fills are not really a big deal.

Best wishes!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
