Should I Be Fearful To Begin Puree's?

I am fearful and having anxiety about beginning full time mushies Tuesday. I did mess around yesterday with a tablespoon of mushed up fries and ketchup and stopped once my belly wasn't rumbling (though it began again 30 minutes later and I had a shake.) Even though my belly wasn't by any means feeling full, I wasn't hungry either and I stopped. I wanted to continue to eat though just because it was sooooooooooo freakin' good.

My fear is that I will push it and experience pain or stretch my pouch. I'm also afraid that I will not be able to get all the liquids in between eating puree's. I went shopping today and got all kinds of stuff that will probably last a damn month though purees are for 2 weeks.

I'm excited to taste something OTHER than chocolate Protein Shakes again but fearful of screwing up too. Is this normal? LOL

It's totally normal to be so scared, but mushies rock after liquids. I loved pureed chili with a little sour cream, mashed potatoes, cream of wheat. When I first started with mushees it didn't take much to fill me up, so you probably won't overeat.

Good luck - they will taste so great.

I was banded on 7/13, so my mushies started today! I too am nervous, and have been taking it slow. I started with grits this morning, and had a smashed baked potato for dinner. I was full with both. I'm nervous about overdoing it as well, as I know it takes a minute for the brain to catch up with the belly!

Im currently almost 5 weeks post op still on mushies and yes it gets hard!! Be careful! You will get to a point where you are able to eat antyhing and your appeitite is back. It is really scary. Thats where I am now. I get so scared and Im so sick of soft food. I eat really anything right now, but still healthy. I dont get my first fill till Aug 3rd. Mushies will fill u up for awhile but be prepared for them to not be so filling after a couple weeks, once healing has gone down. Hang in there!

No don't be fearfull but make sure that you make choices that are healthy and satisfying. Mashed pumpkin, sweet potato, mashed potato,cauliflower etc etc would all be far better choices than mushed up fries!

I would strongly suggest that you speak with your Dr so that he/she can help alleviate your anxiety.

People here can offer a LOT of advice, some good, some bad, but the only REAL authority for you should be the person that put your band IN you. It is important to keep in touch with them, and follow their prescribed behavior TO THE LETTER, even if it seems counterintuitve.

Your surgeon has (hopefully) done hundreds or thousands of these operations, and has been able to refine their procedure based upon the various outcomes of their patients. So, it is IMPORTANT that you follow the instructions that they give you with regard to eating, and everything else.

So, give your Dr a call, and they will no doubt have an answer for you....it will most likely alleviate the anxiety you are having about this.

The mushie stage was such a welcome relief to the shakes. It is imortant that you make healthy choices. Proteins will help you stay full longer. Scrambled eggs, blended Soups, LF cottage or ricotta cheese, fish, LF/SF pudding are good choices. One of my favorite recipes is adding Tomato sauce to LF ricotta & topping with some grated parmesan. To increase the Protein count I add vanilla or chocolate Protein Powder to pudding, and Unjury chicken broth protein powder to soups and instant mashed potatoes. I cook with lots of spices, so other than the way the food looks, the mushies taste great.

Couldn't agree more and I am having alot of fun experimenting with different foods/soups and herbs and spices. Another great combo is rotisserie chicken and black bean Soup w/cilantro and you can add a bit of greek yogurt...its got alot of protein and is great to incorporate into veggies for puree purposes bc it add that important protein!! Great stuff. It will help you tremendously to choose foods that are good for you and if not naturally protein rich, supplement w/protein powders! Good luck! You will be great! ^_^

Thank you guys! I’m excited to have something other than liquid, but afraid of what it will do to me, i.e. upset stomach, pain from over doing it/not knowing the limit, getting hungry 15-30 minutes later even after having a Protein, getting liquids in between meals etc. Just general transition anxiety I guess. I reckon I’ll have it again in two weeks when it’s soft chews and I’ll hate to see me when it’s regular food! LOL I’m attending a band support group tomorrow night and will pose my fears. I’ve already mentioned my anxiety to the surgeon at post op and he said just to take it slow and listen to what my new stomach is trying to tell me. I’ll give it a shot!

A support group will so totally help you. I am glad you are going. The mushies are a wonderful change from the liquids. It made me feel human again. I am sure you have proabably already heard on here and may already have one but a Magic Bullet is a lifesaver while in the mushy stage. I decided to stay on mushies until my first fill even though I am allowed to go to soft solids now. I don't want to find myself eating too much and there are so many foods I can eat while in the mushies, I don't feel deprived at all.

this is a great thread...i'm having mixed emotions about moving to mushies (this wednesday)...i get HUNGRY once a day and definately want to eat...not all day but literally once per day. And my stomach has started growling again so I know it's feeling better :smile:

So in one way, i can't wait because oh just to taste food again...but at the same time, i want to be sure that my band is good

I went grocery shopping yesterday even though I don't move to soft foods until tomorrow and I can't wait! Thanks for all the other suggestions. I am a vegetarian so getting the Protein is a bit harder for me, but that ricotta and marinara combination sounds delicious. Well off to have a Protein shake :bored:

SO I started mushies today..and its FANTASTIC! Love it love it love it...

Linsey- yep, i'm REALLY going! It's may 14-17, 2010. They did it this past may but I couldn't go...did'nt look too much into it but i also didn't realize that they just walk around and hang out with everyone...OMG i can't even stand it! They're grown...I'm grown...LOL I am SO excited..and i'll be a skinny, healthy, sexy hot momma by then! It's just gonna be a lot of fun...

I must admit that purees do rock. :D I'm not sure why I was nervous. Perhaps I was looking at my new stomach as this tiny thing in which nothing will fit anymore?

Now my concern is eating too much. I'm not sure how much to eat. I've been eating when hungry and until I'm not hungry, but not until full. I don't know what full is and don't wanna push it. I have noticed that if I eat something thicker like hummus, I get satisfied and do not feel hungry as quickly as I do if I eat green Beans and mashed potatoes.

I'm still supplementing with shakes, but am enjoying purees. :) Thanks everyone!

I was a little nervous after the first few times I ate...I try to stick with the 3 oz..sometimes I can tolerate 3.5...no fill yet so not much restriction. He said as long as I keep it under 4oz I should be good...I really try to keep it to 3 tho...if i eat too fast i noticed i get gas pain in my shoulder right away. I can tell that it's either too fast or too much...

How is everyone else doing?

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
