Have you noticed that your palate has changed?

Recommended Posts

I saw Ruby (the lady that has her own reality show about losing weight) in an interview talking about how her palate has changed since she was doing the pre-made food program. She says she craves fish.

I also have noticed the same thing. When I go to a restaurant, I order fish because that's what I want, not because that is what is the most healthy. I literally want fish every day. Most of my cravings are for healthy things. I won't talk about chocolate, though - that will never go away.

No, honestly for me, no. My motivation has changed. Now I try to pick foods that will keep me full longer as opposed to those that don't. But I still like the same old food I ever did. I could pretend I have changed, but if I'm honest, not a bit. That's ok, though....I have the band and that's the important change. I believe now that I can lose and KEEP it OFF. I know I can't overeat like I could. So I have changed a good deal, but my "tastes" are as they have always been.

I think I'm more picky. I will only put the best foods, the best ingredient in my mouth (most days, anyway!). If I'm going to eat something, I make sure it's something that I absolutely love. We eat so little now, why do it on food that is just..meh.

I will have to agree that my palate has changed. It's not that I crave different things, it's that some of the foods I used to eat don't taste the same anymore. I find some of the ones that contain high fructose corn Syrup taste funny and feel funny on my tongue.

I only know this because I snuck a bite of a hostess chocolate donut. It was really nasty. Too sweet and felt like it coated the roof of my mouth and my tongue.

But I think that has more to do with my after-surgery complications (ulcer erupted) and the meds I'm now on for it.

But whatever it is, it's enough to keep me away from all my old "weaknesses"!

How about dark chocolate? That is how I satisfy that urge. I include two dove-mini-dark chocolates in my bag every day. One for 10am and one for 2pm.

I satisfy my choclate urges with Viactive calcium chews. Fortunately, that does the trick for me.

Some foods don't taste the same to me anymore - especially those I used to binge on - chips, doughnuts. While I think some things truly do taste different to me, I also think part of it is the relationship I had with those foods- maybe it wasn't so much the food that I liked, but being able to sit down and eat a huge quantity of it to comfort myself?? I can eat 3 potato chips and it does nothing for me now. In the past I would have wanted to devour most of a bag. Whatever it is, it keeps me away from those things for the most part - although to be honest I still find myself trying my "old favorites" once in a while, but usually am disappointed by the taste and don't eat much of them.

I crave green Beans all the time, not sure why. I never used to eat them in the past, now I rather eat them for dinner or lunch. I have also tried some of my old favorite's and you are right I don't get the same satifaction out of it like I used to.

I really don't even care to eat most of the time. Since I am struggling just to eat I don't even care about food anymore.

My tastes have definitely changed. The thought of fast food repulses me now. I tried to eat part of a fast food hamburger the other day and just could not do it. It was disgusting, plus it hurt.

I am on the green bean kick too! Don't know why...I always liked them, but could take them or leave them. Now..YUM!

Right there with ya! Especially after my last fill I felt so frustrated with food. It felt like a chore, something I had to do. I really have a hard time when I have a cold and my little tummy fills up with drainage. I find that when I do want to eat it is usually something that will be "easy" to eat.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
