Banding and Diabetes: Did it help?

Recommended Posts

I am new to the site I really like it. I have a question for anyone who has diabetes and has the lap band.

Did it help you diabetes?

How well did it help your diabetes?

How fast did it help your diabetes?

I'm still on post-op diet (liquid) and was banded a little more than 2 weeks ago. I'm not sure yet how well it's helped, but I've had to stop taking one of the pills because my blood sugar kept tanking. So I will know more in about three months, but I think it is helping a lot. Just can't drink a whole lot of drinks with sugar in it.

I'm curious about the responses on this thread. I do have type 2 Diabetes(for about a year), I was banded six weeks ago. I have some days when I still take a very low dose of Glipizide, but some I don't (if my sugar is high), but the last few weeks it been good. I'll probably have to go through 1 or 2 Ac1 tests, but my PC Dr. is hoping when I get 40 pounds off I'll reverse it.

My surgeons did encourage RNY since I'm diabetic (and high BMI), but respected my decision to get band. Getting rid of my diabetes is main my goal with the band.

I'm not diabetic but was "pre"...in fact 7/08 my PCP told me "do something or in 3 months you'll be on diabetes meds" my glucose was 126 which is just over the 125 threshold...but rather than getting retested etc I got the band. At 6 months post op (and about 30 pounds down) my blood sugar was 112. I go in a couple weeks for my latest checkup; now at almost 70 down (and after finding my "sweet spot" in May) I am anticipating a glucose level at/under 100. So for me, it saved me from developing Diabetes II.

Hello there, Well "SO FAR" I have stopped talking all three of my diabetes meds. I was banded 2 weeks ago. My PCP had me stop all my meds 3 weeks before surgery, and I had to keep track of my numbers. The highest I have been in the past 4 weeks was 125, and that was about an hour after having some chocolate milk during the full liquid stage.

I go back on Aug 7th to my PCP to see if he wants me to continue to stay off of them or if he will do an adjustment.

Hi! I had lapband 17 months ago and I went from over 150 units of insulin a day down to 25 units, I would say that was pretty significant. It took a while (probably a year) of weight loss to get me down to only the 25 units. I'm working on getting rid of those 25 and only being on oral meds. Hopefully I will eventually get off those as well. I also have sleep apnea and that has gotten better as well. Good luck, it will happen. Don't get discouraged, I didn't lose as quickly as some people but it has taught me Portion Control, I never take more than I know I can eat. The restriction won't allow you to over eat as you will throw it up. Believe me, everyone has tried.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.

Lost my Pup last month and struggled really hard for that first month. Stopped tracking intake and slid into old habits here and there. Also quit working out. Can't walk in the neighborhood because of all of the memories we shared. Losing my Pup is the most heartbreaking thing I've ever been through. My Pup was my world 💔
Talked to my doc during my one year followup and they were not worried about my current status. They know, and I know, that I will get back on track.

I'm so sorry. I lost my pup (Mr. Bitters - a chocolate Pomeranian) 2 years ago and it still makes me tear up. He was my everything - my constant companion. I understand. Do the best you can to get back on track.
