giselle gay 0 Posted July 18, 2009 It has been 8 days since my surgery and I have already cheated on what I am suppose to eat. 2 days ago I was still on just full liquids and I ate some veggies in my Soup. Today i had a little piece of chicken with my gumbo. I feel fine, but wandering if I could have messed something up?
jujuvee 0 Posted July 18, 2009 Ok so I could just say I'm sure everything is fine and you'll do better tomorrow..... But that's not me and a hug may not make things all better so you need to get a grip and follow your pre op diet, it was not given to you for you to disect and create your own plan, it so you can heal without the churning of your stomach to digest. Why chance it!!! It's not easy but imagine how you would feel if you did cause your band to slip. Call your surgeon or nutritionist and inform them of what your doing and they can suggest foods that may help you through this phase otherwise what starts off as a small piece of chicken will eventually be a whole piece or other foods that your unhealed stomach should not be digesting. 99ways 0 Posted July 18, 2009 Be cautious, cheating so early on might not have immediate effect, but (according to my surgeon) might make your band likely to slip months later down the line... your stomach needs to heal and allow itself to secure the band. you can do it, just think of the huge change you just went through with the surgery, not to mention the money spent (wel, in my case hehe, was out of my pocket). Would be a shame to undo it all over a few pieces of veggies and meat.
knrpick 0 Posted July 18, 2009 Yikes! I did the same thing, and got the smackdown just like you! I realize that I needed a smack down BAD! I had surgery Monday and had chicken, very moist, a couple days later. I realize now, because of everyone here, that your stomach has been through A LOT! And you need to give that little thing rest, just like you need rest. It gets easier...... well thats what they tell me. I can't wait till the mushies! Sad that I'm dreaming of mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs! :-) Hang in there! We are all here for you!
RestlessMonkey 7 Posted July 18, 2009 It's very important to follow your post op diet plan as written. Advancing your diet too quickly is a major cause of band slippage, either now or down the line (if it doesn't seat properly) Please ... just because others "cheated" and got away with it doesn't mean it's ok. If you are too hungry call your surgeon on monday, but don't cheat. This time it really is only yourself you'll be hurting.
RestlessMonkey 7 Posted July 18, 2009 Many of us don't know that when we eat, our stomach churns to digest food (even a bite of vegetable or chicken. If you have to chew it, your stomach churns to digest it). If you think it through, then, it's logical that you need to be cautious. Because most likely your lap band is sewn into place....and if your stomach thrashes and churns (and it does, if you digest. You don't feel it, but it ALWAYS moves around some to aid in digestion) it can rip loose a suture or two, or loosen them or move the band enough that it doesn't heal properly. I've been taken to task for "scaring" new people, but honestly what I've said is what happens. Don't risk it. Some docs are comfortable advancing their patients sooner but each surgeon has his/her own style, etc. So do what your doc says. You aren't the first to be VERY VERY hungry and if we can make it then I KNOW you can make it!
greytz 4 Posted July 19, 2009 It is so very important to ensure you follow the instructions you are given. Why did you go through surgery and expense just to turn around and defeat the very thing you want to help you? It might be time to find a support group and get some help. You have a ways to go. giselle gay 0 Posted July 19, 2009 Thanks Graytz, I sometimes don't know why I do the things I do. I'm thinking it's out of habit. I have always tasted little bits of this or that. Well this time It's just one little thing that could do damage. I'm new at it, but I already know I will be relying on the grace of God to teach me and help me. A support group is a great idea, Thanks, I needed that! I'm still feeling tight around the bottom of neck but my sister (who is banded for 1year now) said if something was stuck, I wouldn't be able to have had the broth and Water that I had earlier. Do you agree? How long have you been banded?
greytz 4 Posted July 19, 2009 I agree with that. You would probably be stuck. That small amount probably didn't hurt you but I am sure a continuation of that might would cause you a problem. Since your sister has been banded for awhile she would be a great means of support for you. I have been banded since 06-17-09. I know how tempting it is to want to eat something you shouldn't. I am currently in what they refer to as "bandster hell" and will get my first fill on 08-04-09. Can't wait. Anyway, stick to it and you will do fine. I already had a little restriction which has helped me immensely and I can now get on the treadmill and that really takes my mind off of eating. I'll say a prayer for you. Good Luck!
