I was diagnosed with my PCOS about 18 months ago. Started metformin and spiractalone(sp?) with great results. I was banded 4-29 of this year and was told to crush my pills in order to take them. I don't know if anyone else does this but it is NASTY. I cannot get them down without gagging so unfortunately I haven't taken my meds since surgery :scared2: starting to see the symptoms comming back (acne, brown Patches on neck and underarm, and possibly why this stubborn weight isn't comming off so easy) I heard that there are liquid forms. Is this true? Are they any better tasting? Or is there something else I can do to make myself tolerate the meds??

I don't have PCOS but I had to crush some medication that I take right after surgery that was down right NASTY so I'll tell what I did and maybe it will help with yours. I talked to a compounding pharmacist....the people that actually make up certain types of prescriptions from scratch and she suggested using peppermint extract and a sweetener called Stevia Extract (just a couple of drops). I wouldn't call the end result tasty but it definitely took the bitter taste away so I could tolerate it. I would crush my medication in a small glass, add only enough Water to make it drinkable, couple of drops of peppermint extract, two drops of sweetener, stir it all together, and VOILA!! She also suggested a drop of Hersheys chocolate Syrup after the mixture if it leaves a bitter aftertaste. I hope these tips help you!!

I have PCOS as well, and I get my metformin in liquid form (called Riomet). It has some kind of flavoring added to it; still doesn't that great, but I imagine it's much better than the pills crushed up. I take a few other meds that I have to cut in half, and one capsule that I open and dump on a spoonful of yogurt or ice cream every night.

A quick call to your pharmacist will get answers as to what is available in liquid form. I haven't taken any meds since the say of surgery except for lysine (an amino acid supplement) before going to the beach and while I was there ... and I had no problem just swallowing the pills. I've heard others say they can swallow their meds one at a time with a little bit of time between pills and others who rather than crush them simply cut them into smaller pieces with a pill cutter.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
