"doesn't look like you're losing any weight"

Recommended Posts

Yes, someone who knows I had the surgery actually said that to me!!! :)

When did you start noticing weight loss via the mirror and not the scale? I was banded 4/10 and I walk past reflective glass everyday at work and I still look the same.........

surg 320, today 290lbs

The larger you are when you start, the more you need to lose for it to show, unfortunately. But you are losing weight. You've lost almost 10% of your total weight. Don't let that type of comment upset you. Just ignore it, or say something like "Doesn't it?"

Hi, that's just mean.. sometime people say the stupidest things.. I feel the same way when I walk by a mirror, but I can tell when I put my clothes on, there looser..my sister actually said that to me, because I had told her I had lost 25lbs and she said she couldn't tell. But I told her I know you can't because I can't either, I can see it in my clothes fitting loose.... But don't worry about it.. You have lost 30 lbs thats really good, I've lost just about the same and I had my surgery on April 15th. Weight 288 the day before surgery.. Now weigh 262 but I flucate between 259 and 262. I need another fill go on Aug 10th that's the soonest dr can see me he's booked up.. :) Keep up the good work.. Be encouraged.

Sometime people can say thing that are mean because they are miserable in life. I have loss 32 pounds too and I had my surgery on April 6, 2009. Thirty-two pounds might not sounds much but its better than gaining 32 pounds. All my old clothes are big so the weight and inches are coming off slowly but it will increase I tell myself that everyday.

Some people are so ignorant or perhaps it's jealousy. Whatever it is, it's their problem and you are loosing so just smile and walk away.

Keep in mind that it's not about THEM....it's about YOU.

YOU are the one whom this loss is important to.

You've done VERY well thus far, but as a percentage of your overall weight, the amount you have has lost is not large enough to be REALLY apparent to most people. In another 10 pounds, people will really begin to notice.

But remember....this is not about THEM. It's about YOU.

YOU notice the loss....and that's all that matters.

:)

Firefly,

I like to relate lost weight to things that you can actually visulize or touch....

So, you have lost:

1. One 30 pound bag of dog food

2. 120 cubes of butter

3. 6 -- 5 pound bags of flour

Also, remember that everytime the scale drops.... you will never see that pound go back on!!! This weight is off for the rest of your life... no more Yo-Yo dieting.

Keep up the good work.

I have found that the people that are around me on a daily basis (work, neighbors, etc) wont notice as much as when you see people you have not seen since you started to lose weight.

I have lost about 50lbs since I started and I will get a comment here and there from people I see daily. However, I went to a BBQ last weekend and saw many people I had not seen in a few months and I was overwhelmed with the great comments I got. It was extremely uplifting and really gave me a feeling of satisfaction that the hard work I am putting in IS noticable. What a great day that was.

Keep up the great work. People will notice.

I can really relate to this. While no one else has said anything like this to me, I've said it to myself. I've complained a lot that I DON'T see it. I have to work to remember that the loss is real, even if it doesn't look like what I thought it would. I've lost almost 40lbs since my presurgery diet started in mid February. I was banded on April 7th. I do feel it in my clothes. I finally gave up and got some smaller clothes yesterday. I didn't realize how big my clothes had gotten until I put on the smaller ones and they fit fine. I thought I would be more excited to buy new clothes, but I've really put it off. I agree that when there is so much to lose, it takes more for it to show. I still get frustrated though.

Oh I wouldn't necessarily say its because they are miserable in life. Sometimes people, including myself say things that we probably shouldn't have - and don't even think about how what was said could hurt someone. Haven't you?

I doubt there is a person alive that hasn't said something innocently that they wish they wouldn't have.

Anyway, to the OP, don't worry too much what others think about you. You didn't get this surgery to get compliments out of people I'm sure. You did it to be more healthy and to learn a healthier lifestyle. In all honesty, the bigger you are, the longer it takes for others to notice. We had similar stats and it took me to about 50 Lbs for ppl to really notice. It will happen, just stay positive and keep doing good. :)

I agree. Say something that will put them in their place - like "And you don't look like my doctor so how would you know?"

BTW queen - you have done amazingly well and look great. You look Irish. Are you? Just curious. My late husband was Irish and we visited Ireland years ago and many looked like you.

I'm still frustrated with my 4 cc's and no restriction. I had this surgery to help me eat smaller portions and I'm not getting anywhere. Help!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
