Lap band and arthritis reversal?

Recommended Posts

I am looking into getting the lap band surgery. One of the questions that I forgot to ask at the seminar is this...I was just recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis. I am only 39 years old and my dr blames it on my weight. Has anyone that has had this surgery seen any improvement in their arthritis post surgery? That is really my only health problem (other than being overweight) and as I have a 3 year old, feeling better would be SO wonderful!

Thanks in Advance!

Tonya

I am 53 and had the band surgery on May15th. Before surgery, I was hurting somewhere every day ,and having to take something for pain. I just realized a few days ago that I had trouble remembering the last time I had taken even plain Tylenol. I have lost 30 lbs, and knock on wood don't have the pain I was having before surgery. Good luck to you.

I was banded 3/25/08 and knee arthritis was one of my co-morbidities. My knees feel so much better now. A little discomfort now and then, but I no longer feel like I need to have knee replacements. It should only make your joints feel better. It won't rid you of the arthritis, but it will help a lot.

Osteoarthritis won't reverse. It is a wearing away of the cartilege and that doesn't magically come back with weight loss. BUT...losing does make it much easier to get around on weight bearing joints, it causes less wear and tear on the bones and cartileges, and can help keep you from getting worse. So it is totally worth it to lose weight if you have arthritis in the knees, hips, ankles, etc.

Hi - I had my surgery September "08" and have lost 60#. Amazing what it has done for my joint pain. I have osteoarthritis throughout my entire body, especially my feet, but now I feel so much better, I can walk and exercise for long periods of time w/o as much pain. I admit I still take Celebrex on damp, cool days or if I have over done it but not every day anymore. Good luck, and hope to see you answering the same question for someone else soon. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
