Really - How much does it hurt ?

Recommended Posts

I have a pretty high tolerance for pain & I have endured very serious pain - almost lost 3 fingers on left hand, ectopic pregnancy - tube burst & natural childbirth twice. With that said, I want to be prepared. I know everyone is different, but really, how bad was it?

Thanks!

What pain in particular?

The surgery was over so quickly and the pain meds were great.

The gas got a little intense, but manageable.

One thing I encountered that is extraordinary and not at all something that happens very often is that the placement of the lap band triggered a circumstance of diabetic stomach (my stomach expanded and swelled with gas and would not empty), which then ended up stretching an existing, but previously unknown, ULCER.

I was in the hospital two weeks in a row after the lap band placement and was in serious (morphine-worthy) pain.

But, fortunately, not a bit of the pain was due to the lap band or the surgery itself.

So for me, the lap band recovery was easy. It was the OTHER issues that the placement triggered that were so painful.

I'm pleased to report both the diabetic stomach and the ulcer pain have been resolved.

Good luck to you.

I am sorry to hear about your ordeal. I hope you are doing better. I am talking about the post op pain and the gas.

Thanks!

i had surgery yesterday. really not too painful. take your pain meds when necessary and you can keep your pain at a 3 or 4 on a scale of 1-10. I really can't call it strictly "pain" it is more a tightness... similar to what you feel with gas when you really feel the squeeze before a big burp. it can be difficult/uncomfortable changing positions when sleeping, bending down, or anytime you would typicaly use your abs.. but tolerable.

i do have the trapped gas up in my left shoulder blade. a heating pad works well...but even better is I have my daughter use a thumping fist on the area so as to "burp" me in an attempt to break it up. it really seems to help.

with what you have endured and tolerated,...you will get through this piece of cake

For me the pain was tolerable. The worst for me was getting in and out of bed, rolling over, etc, around the port. I would get a sharp pain if I didn't have help. But by a week out things were really great. No where near the pain of childbirth. At least for me.

I didn't have any pain in my stomach at all. I was tired and the only pain i had was the pain in my shoulder but that was it. I was back to work in 3 days

On a scale of 0 - 10, my pain was really only a 1 or 2. I was more uncomfortable with the gas than anything. My neck and shoulder hurt worse than the actual surgery areas!

DB,

There really isn't any pain to speak of. More of a discomfort for a few days. It's totally worth it though.

The 1st 2 or 3 days are the worst. Day 2, I mostly took my pain meds and slept. I was really uncomfortable when awake. I think it was mostly the gas. Just take the pain meds when you need to and just wait for it to get better. Everyone is diffrent. Good luck to you.

I had almost no pain. A little soreness, that's it. No trapped gas to speak of (love my Doc for that; I think he must have removed it, which they all can, but not all do)

I've had dental procedures that hurt more.

Has anyone had surgery in Cancun, by Dr. verboonen?

You'll probably have a bigger response to this question if you post it as it's own thread under the "surgeons and hospitals" forum. Click on HOME. Scroll down through the forums until you find "Surgeons and Hospitals" and click on that. Then in the upper left area will be a "button" that says "NEW THREAD" Click on that and post your question.

Also lower down is a forum on how to research surgeons in Mexico.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
