Acid Reflux at Night

Recommended Posts

Hello All: I have had my band in Aug, 08 with no complications (so far) and am down 62 pounds. About 3 weeks ago, I have been experiencing acid reflux at night as soon as I lay down. I called my doctor to get an unfill, but I cannot get in until the end of July. I was told to do liquids for the next couple of days and see if that helps. The only thing different is that I have had a little bit of Coke over the past couple of weeks (but have now stopped that!!)

Could drinking that Coke caused this irritation? Has anyone been helped by doing liquids for a couple of days to rest the stomach?

Any help would be great! Thanks, Dee

I can't speak to the Coke, but I know that nearly no one on these boards are cleared for drinking soda.

As for giving the stomach a rest. I have gone to liquids only for a day or two after getting stuck or vomiting and I always end up feeling better having done this. Though, maybe I would have felt better anyway.

Reflux at night is definitely a sign of too tight. My doctor treats this as an emergency and insists on seeing his patients right away. If you're still having symptoms, maybe you should try to get in before your appointment at the end of the month.

The only other thing...are you maybe eating later? When was your last fill? Because; if you got a fill recently and have dinner within a few hours of bed time (or have a snack) that may be a big part of your problem. Just guessing here!

Hopefully the liquids will help you calm things back down!

My doctor told me to buy an over the counter drug called Prilosec. It is a pill you take once a day for two weeks and it should help. I am now on my fourth day of taking it and have found it to be a great help. I have had a slip in my band and my doctor removed all the fills I ever got and we are waiting to see if it goes back to its original position.

I hope this help you the same way it helped me since I wasn't getting any sleep at night due to the acid reflux.

Thanks, Nicole

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
