Nervous about the liquid diet

Recommended Posts

I start the 2 week liquid, pre surgery diet this week. I am a little nervous. I also have a wedding to attend next week and I do not think that I can bring my shake with me:w00t:. Does anyone know what happens if you cannot stick completely to the liquid diet for the whole two weeks?

Stick to the liquid diet no matter what. It is more important that the rules of the wedding. About being nervous... just think of the weight you will lose! That will be great! I would think it could even delay your surgery should you choose not to follow the surgeons orders. Stay the course & good luck!!!

The purpose of the liquid diet pre-op is to help shrink your liver to make your surgery easier / possible. My doc did not require a liquid pre-op diet. There are people here whose livers did not shrink enough and were not able to have their surgery.

My thought is that you should always do what your doctor tells you. My other thought is that a small meal at a wedding one time during the two weeks will not harm anything, but do you really want to take my word for it and end up not being able to have your surgery as scheduled?

Drink the Protein Shake before you go to the wedding and politely refuse the food if asked. You can drink other types of liquid while there (no alcohol of course). It is really important to stay on track before the surgery. You could run the risk of your surgery being postponed.

I didn't have a pre-op diet but I was on liquids 12 days post-op. I went to an anniversary party and thought the same thing you are now. I had my shake before and than asked if they had any kind clear broth at the party and the waiter was more than happy to help me. He had Soup which he strained for me! I just carried a glass of Water and lemon all day and things were fine. No one even noticed I wasn't eating.

There will be other parties, other situations but if this is important to you hopefull it won't be as hard a you are anticipating!

Good Luck!

Call your nutritionist or surgeon's office and mention the wedding, and how close it is to your surgery date. As Enchanted mentioned, the purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver, which I understand happens quite quickly if you follow the guidelines. Most likely your nurtitionist/surgeon will advise you foods that you can eat - limit the portion, avoid alcohol, soda, carbs, sweets. You are not banded yet, so you won't have to worry about restrictions or food textures. Good luck.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
