I was just wondering what everyone was told. I have given up soda, which wasn't hard, probably only had one or two diet sodas a day. I am 4 weeks post op and just this past week I started having coffee again. Just one cup a day. My friend told me that was a no-no. (She said it can dehydrate you and make you hungry) I honestly can't function without a cup first thing in the morning. I haven't noticed anything different-meaning it affects me just like it did before surgery, no more no less. Is anybody else having a cup of joe in the a.m? I guess I could give it up if I'm doing major harm but I'd rather not!!!

In my opinion I dont think your doing harm, Caffine is generly not good for you. can cause you to have spikes in ur sugar level and when u crash atleast im generaly hungry. But thats how i was preband. I had one cup of coffee and it filled me and i enjoyed it. I dont think theres anythign to worry about you should drink more Water cuz it does dehydrate you. it also eats away at the Vitamins. so make sure not to take ur Vitamins in the am with a cu of coffee.

Good luck.. and if you feel moe comfy ask ur nutritionist or ur doc.

Hi,

I was banded last Thursday and my surgeon has said it's ok to have coffee, I have been having one each day as I too can't survive without my caffeine fix. The only things he has told me to stay clear of are fizzy drinks, alcohol, bread and pastry. Hope this helps

Fluffy, I've had teas and coffees since one week post-surgery. My doc says okey doke. No problem. I think that people who do have up/down sugars may have trouble with it. But if it doesn't seem to spike/crash your cravings or blood sugar levels then I would think you are fine. Remember, everything in moderation...so your one cup in the morning seems fine. I am four weeks post op now, having half or one cup of coffee in the morning and lots of iced tea in the afternoon because there hasn't been one day this summer (in Texas) below 100 degrees Farenheit. :-)

I was banded January 2008 and to this day no soda or anything bubbly, but Caffeine? I never drank coffee before the surgery, and now, can't go a day without have 3 shots of espresso. The craving started 2 weeks after surgery.

I've had coffee since right after my surgery - it was a part of my post-op liquid diet. My surgeon never said no coffee.... thank goodness. I NEED it and so do those who have to live with me  I don't drink LOTS but I sure do enjoy that cup or two in the morning. Take care. Becky

Oh poop. coffee reduces your risk of diabetes and just recently they've found based on initial research that it can prevent alzheimers.

I was told coffee and tea are fine. As long as its coffee and not an excuse for Syrup and whipped cream. THOSE types of coffee are not fine, lol.

Hi Fluffy RN,

My doc said coffee and tea were fine. I have PCOS and I was banded 7/3/09 by Dr. Ortiz in MX. I stopped caffeine about 4 weeks pre-op because when I have caffeine it drops my blood sugar in a hurry. Then I get into that starvation mode and have to eat QUICKLY. I knew that this would not work with having to lose weight pre-operatively or post-operatively. I actually feel much better being off the caff. I do still have my coffee and tea but their Decaf. Hope this helps!

Tish

My surgeon never said no coffee. In fact it was on my list of things I could have along with tea. I am a Decaf kind of girl but I never read anything that said I it was a no no.

My Dr. said I can have 1 cup of coffee or tea with caffeine a day and it does not count towards my 64 oz of fluids each day. Caffeine can act like a diuretic sometimes and deplete the fluids from your body. However they understand sometime you need that kick start in the AM!

No coffee restrictions here. If I'm drinking coffee, though, I usually count only half of the ounces as my Water for the day. So a 16 ounce iced coffee is only 8 ounces of "water" for me.

My surgeon also doesn't recommend it, but I'm sure people in my program still use it. They don't encourage the use because it's acidic and can contribute to ulcers. Also, they think that caffeine can stimulate the stomach...but I haven't looked at any research about this. I do like coffee, but haven't had it since surgery, but I don't see why a cup now and then should be an issue.

Each post op diet is different. I was told not to have caffeine; but I asked WHY! (I've learned to do this! LOL) and was advised by the nutritionist "because it makes some people hungry". Well, it doesn't make me hungry, so about 3 months out I started having my 1 cup of coffee in the AM and my sugarless iced tea throughout the day (although I get 64 oz of Water too)

It doesn't really dehydrate you after all, they've found, and it is actually good for you in moderation.

If you're told NO, maybe ask why, and see if the reasoning applies to you?

As to being an appetite stimulant, be aware that for some it is actually an appetite suppressant (and it was an ingredient in OTC weight loss products for YEARS).

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
