Not Banded yet but looking for information

Recommended Posts

I have not been banded and don't know if my insurance (Medicare/Arkansas Medicaid) will cover it. I know they typically will not but I have special circumstances that I am hoping will make this an option.

I am diabetic, have high blood pressure, asthma and also I have peripheral neuropathy which my cardiologist says that it will only worsen and that it is why I have so much trouble maintaining my electrolyte balance. Though I MUST drink Gatorade every day I also have to increase my salt intake of I am at risk for electrolyte deficiencies.

I have heard the gastric bypass often causes Vitamin and mineral deficiencies and that could be a serious risk for me. This is why I think the lap band would be the best/safest option for me.

My goal here is to discover more information as well as to find resources that I can check into that may help me in getting the surgery done.

Something has to be done as ALL of my doctors have told me I need to do something about my weight or my health will continue to deteriorate.

I can't help you with any insurance questions; mine didn't cover the surgery so I financed.

My advice to you is to do a lot of reading. Look through the forums here. Look into other types of weight loss surgery (there are several). Find other forums to read through. Look at the blogs of people who are considering the different types of surgery and read about their experiences. Go to doctors' informational seminars. Really, you can't over research this

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
