During surgery...local anesthesia or are you "out"?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering. I was told I am having surgery at the outpatient center. Do you think this means I will not have to spend any time in the hospital?

I have hear of lots of people doing the in-n-out surgery... Doesnt mean you will not have General Anesthesia... which is mostly the case...

I was in the hospital over night.. and boy did I put them Night nurses to work... LOL It was so much fun now that i think of it...

I was in and out! NO hospital stay for me. My surgery was totally outpatient. It was great. My mom is a retired nurse so she took very good care of me afterward. Most outpatient surgery centers do not provide rooms for overnight. If it is determined that you may need to stay overnight they will transport you to the hospital. I had outpatient surgery in my hospital so I knew I was not going to have to stay overnight! YEA! I have worked there for 14 years I do not want to have to stay overnight then it would be like I lived there. LOL

Outpatient surgery does NOT mean you skip the general anaesthesia. But it's a very short operation and within a few hours you should be able to go home. I had surgery at 8:00 a.m. and was home by 1:00 or so.

I just had my lapband surgery on Monday, and I stayed overnight sent home the next afternoon. I was put to sleep (lol) just minutes before surgery and woke up about 1 1/2 hrs. later.

I had the out-patient. My surgery was at 7:30 am and I was out the door heading home by 11:00 am! I had general anesthsia and my recovery with it was quite short. I felt a little groggy going home but slept it off once I was able to hit the bed! When I woke up, three hours later, i was a little sore but overall felt pretty darn good!

I'd feel cheated without the overnight stay, lol. What - miss out on a day of drowsing in and out of sleep and reading a book in peace and quiet? No way! I couldnt go home to a 2 and a half year old either, she'd have to be elsewhere for a day. The boys would be OK though.

But you can go home several hours after a short general anaesthetic.

I enjoyed the first night in the hospital especially the hospital bed. Being able to move the top of the bed upright was great right after surgery. But, it wasn't necessary and if I was self pay I wouldn't have stayed.

I was an overnighter... but I had the surgery about 3 and by 5 I was up and walking around... drove the nurses nuts... until midnight when the nurse forced me to take a sleeping pill.... I was "out" for the surgery though...
