Hey strangers, question for all you medical types - drug testing

Recommended Posts

I haven't been around here for a really long time. Had the baby, returned to work, and 3 days later was told my job was being eliminated. Jobs in my field tend to be few and far between, especially in this economy... so after deciding I did not want to be a SAHM I went into turbo job hunting mode. The baby is in daycare, so that I could job interview, but I couldn't keep her there indefinitely on one income, nor could I pull her and ever expect a potential employer to be willing to wait 3 months for me (standard daycare wait list in my area). Stressful time, but just like week I received a "dream job" offer. Which is where my question comes in.

My band is, and always has been, tight enough that I cannot pass pills. This means that for pain relief, it's liquid Tylenol or grin & bear it. And admittedly I kept my post-op hydrocodone elixir on hand (not from my band surgery, but from my fall 2007 gall bladder removal), because I get sinus headaches and there are some that liquid Tylenol can't touch. My rule is that I try 3 doses of Tylenol, and if that does nothing, I take a half-dose or dose of my liquid gold hydrocodone. I don't take it lightly because I have such a little amount left!

The new dream job is contingent on passing a follicle drug test that includes screening for hydrocodone, and I had a killer sinus headache about a week ago and finally broke down and took 1 dose without even thinking about it. I didn't even Bbut now I'm completely freaking out because I happened to notice that my prescription expired almost a year ago.

The significance of that? My drug test will surely come back positive for the synthetic opiate from Hydrocodone. They do a 3 month test, and I've taken it for sure once, maybe twice (first time would've been a half dose). So I'm assuming they will ask me to provide a prescription, which I can do -- I still have the original bottle & it still has elixir in it, but the rx is expired and I don't know if an expired rx will be "valid". That has me completely flipping out because I don't want to look like a guilty drug abuser for taking an expired rx, nor do I want to lose this job... it's perfect.

So anyone out there do drug testing, or know about it, who can advise on this situation? Nothing like a way around it, just maybe what I can expect in terms of outcome. Does the expired state of the medication matter a whole lot? Of course I plan to fully disclose what I took and the estimated amount... and will fully disclose my band and purpose for taking elixirs.. but is this HORRIBLE, or not a big deal? Freaking out here, but want honest input.

Thanks!

This is just my opinion, but if you explain the situation, and show the date on the bottle, you should be okay. A drug abuser doesn't take 2 years to finish off a bottle of hydrocodone.

Hopefully, someone will come along with more information. Good luck on the new job!

I agree that your Rx is your Rx and there is no law saying how long it must take you to finish a bottle. I wouldn't even point out that I knew it was expired. Please keep us posted and best wishes.

Hey Wheet! Great to get a bit of an update from you. Congrats on the baby! Hope all is well and it must be or you wouldn't be seeking gainful employment.

Have no clue about drug testing, so I can't help you there. But I do hope it goes well for you and you get the job!

I totally agree with Mimi - don't act defensive, just state the facts: 1.) You have a lap-band and can't take pills for pain 2.) It was your Rx to use for pain as needed. I agree with Donna too, if you had a drug abuse problem, that bottle of pain killer would have been polished off a long time ago!

I will keep my fingers crossed for you, and please keep us posted!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
