Popcorn and straws

Recommended Posts

This may be a crazy question but can any of you eat popcorn? I love going out to see movies but I just can't imagine going and not eating some popcorn. Also can someone explain why we aren't supposed to use straws. My doctor

instructed me not to use straws when drinking liquids.

Thank you

Hi Micheala - I can eat popcorn when i don not have much restriction. But if my band is tight i won't touch it. I think i would be to easy for the pieces of husk to get lodged and that is very painful. As for straws i think you suck in too much air w/ them. Not sure the reason for too much air. Where are you in the lap band journey?

I was told by my Dr. the straws will produce more gas , the band works as a 1 way valve which is why most of us have more gas since being banded.

I personally consider this 'air' notion to be one of those unproven urban legends..

For me it is not the case, when i use a straw I get more gas, when i chew gum I get more gas, I used to use a straw all the time and chew gum, since speaking with my Dr. about my gas problem at my last fill, and him telling me about the gum and the straw causing more gas , I have avoided both and I rarely have gas any more...just my situation, everyone is different

Not only is everyone different, but obviously every Dr is too!

I do well with popcorn, chew gum constantly and use a straw as I was told a straw reduces the size of a gulp, helping keeping gulps smaller...can't have a bandster drinking too fast, it will overfill the pouch and cause pain. How weird is that??

I always use a straw when I'm in a restaurant or having a cocktail, (germ freak here, hate putting my lips on restaurant glass), never had any problems....or maybe that's where that pb came from, hummmmm. ( I don't drink with meals though, I get my Water to go, with a straw)

... one of our stomachs ...

QUOTE]

Oh dear gott en himmel! My mother was right! I am a fat cow! {swoons}

Your theory makes a lot of sense to me Jack.

But I also know that some people just haven't managed to figure out how to drink from a straw... my mother always swallows a bunch of air when she uses a straw. I can't for the life of me figure out how she manages, but she does. I prefer to use a straw. I never have extra gas or swallow enough air to do anything.

I don't see how our band creates a one-way valve. If this were the case, we would not have the PB thing goin' on. Nor would we be able to belch those .... impressive belches we all manage...

I can eat popcorn just find. I just have to make sure I eat Protein first, otherwise the corn makes me want to eat everything in sight and several things that are not...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
