Share your stories of cheating on your preop diet (feeling gulity)

So I went into the preop diet feeling REAL confident like I wasnt going to have any problems sticking to the diet...But as soon as I tasted the protien drink, I wanted to DIE! drinkin it for lunch made me just want to starve for the rest of the 2 weeks...it tasted so bad cuz I used the whole Protein pack n mixed it with Water, it was real creamy and disgusting! I couldnt wait 2 have dinner lol...for the first 3 days I cheated :frown: I found myself eating rice. My mom hasnt been cookin rice latley but for some odd reason she cooked a big pot of rice 1 day and then the next day she made another type of rice and then the next day the same thing! And I knew I had my own type of meals but I couldnt control myself I didnt kno wut was happening. But I knew if I didnt follow my diet I would b puttin myself at risk. So I decided to remain strong and not be tempted to eat. I changed the way I made the drink, instead of mixing the whole pouch I just add two spoons of it and mix it with a lil bit of fruit punch. When I wake up I walk a mile and then later on in the day I walk another mile. I drink the shakes for Breakfast and lunch and sometimes in between I can have unsalted peanuts (for protein) or applesauce and drink alot of water. For dinner I have chicken with small salad with balsamic vinegar. I go 2 parties and I dont eat or drink alcohol. Im impressed with myself Im really trying and I pray I dont mess up for the next 5 days! :) Its gettin easier for me because my surgury is this friday and the more I think about it the more I want to do good. So Im guessin when your surgury date is near, its easier.

Sure! I cheated on my preop diet. I lost 15 pounds anyway. I didn't get the band because my liver hadn't shrunk.

you MUST follow the doctor's directions.... you are most likely not getting enough Protein by doing what you are with the mix. try a pre-made shake- EAS makes some good ones you can find at Walmart--- personally i can't do the powders- I invested in the pre-mixed drinks.... there is also one similar to gatoraide... i didn't like it but GNC carries it- Isopure- you have a week left- I wish you luck.

I only needed to do one week of pre-op but am doing two...

please make sure for these last 5 days you really stick to your diet. yes, many people cheat which is a bad idea... and what you eat when you cheat is the next issue. a half of grilled chicken breast is one thing... rice is another.

be careful k?

good luck and hang tough!!

It is really hard for your pre-op because you think, "I am never going to get to eat this again if I want to do the right thing when I am banded." I thought that a lot and There were a couple of days that I cheated a little. I still lost weight but it was difficult. I had a lower BMI so it turned out ok but the whole point is to get that liver down so they can get in there without running the risk of damaging it. Be strong particularly for your first couple of weeks post-op. If you read some of the threads on here for newly post-op, you will see that it is very trying the first couple of weeks. Just hang in there and you will do fine. Keep getting support and try not to defeat your intentions. Good Luck!

Yup, I cheated. I was on Protein Shakes for damn near a month pre-op. My doc required 2 weeks pre-op, but prefered a 4 week Protein Drink diet. I decided I was going to put my best into the band, pre and post-op. Well, my surgery was on a friday. The tuesday prior to it, a friend and I went to Olive garden. I have 1/2 a bread stick, 3/4's of a bowl of minastroni (sp) Soup and plate of the salad. I felt so guilty, afterwards. But told myself it wasn't a cream-laden carb/fat feast. Looking back, I think 1 cheat in 4 weeks was pretty good. But, it was still a cheat. Cheating too much ould jeaprodize your surgery.

Yea ur right. My nutritionist told me about Isopure, I was going to start that after my surgury but I might as well start that TODAY!

Greytz makes a good point. Also, after you are banded (espec. during "bandster hell"), you are going to be able to eat pretty much anything you ate before (though in smaller amounts).

I did not cheat on my pre-op diet. It was hard to gear myself up to be able to do that, but I kept thinking about how my liver would be slopping around during surgery if I didn't, and how that might either (a) cause me not to be able to get banded; or (:) result in more pain post-op (because of the extra manipulation of my liver).

Try to stay on the straight and narrow now. You're almost there!

Catherine

I like those drinks SO much better than shakes. Seriously, the shakes are gag-inducing. I have a huge container of shake mix and really need to throw it out b/c I am never going to use it. . unless there is a famine and it's either that or starve to death!

ive been put on a 1 week pre diet. my surgery is this friday (the 17th) ive done really well on the diet and NOT cheated. but i did have a couple freezey pops. they are no fat BUT 16 sugars. i really really hope that doesnt jeopardize my surgery. im really confused and worried about the whole liver shrinking deal. ive been on the diet for 6 days now. and ive only lost about 6 pounds!? this doesnt seem good compared to everyone else losing 15 or even 20? im praying that my liver shrunk enough

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
