Anyone had the "old" gall bladder surgery before banding?

Recommended Posts

My sister had gall bladder removal more than 20 yrs. ago. It was the old, awful kind...10 days in hospital, etc. She's concerned that this may cause problems with lap band surgery. Of course she'll be talking to her surgeon about it but thought maybe someone on here might have had some experience. Thanks!

I can't imagine that it would be an issue. Why does she think it would preclude her surgery?

I did not have the old way of my gall bladder surgery, but my doctor said that because I did have my gall bladder out it made it easier inside to put the band on. I guess with the gall bladder no longer in the way he did not have to move things around as much. At least that is what he explained to my husband. He was also able to use the scars that were already there for a couple of the incesions. I think she will be just fine, but please keep us posted.

My surgeon said it makes it a bit harder if you have the old style and might have some scar tissue around the big incision. He said the surgery takes about 10 minutes longer but it doesn't prevent it.

Thanks everyone! My sister was worried about scar tissue. Her incision is 10-12 inches long and she had a really rough time after the surgery. This was over 25 years ago though. I told her if she'd been born later like I was :frown: she wouldn't have had to go thru the old way. We're 15 yrs. apart. We're going to a seminar on Tues and are trying to think of things we want to find out about or get answered.

Thanks much,

I had mine done old school 20 years ago and I have 16 staple holes or railroad tracks as I like to call it. yes if you do the math I was 16. Anyway the surgeon that did my gallbladder surgery put my band in and he had no problem and I have no incisions on the same side as my big gallbladder scar.

I had mine done a week before the new laparoscopy started at the hospital I was at. I was so sick I was not willing to wait four days until the new surgery started!

I had the old way of gallbladder surgery years ago. It did make my lapband sg take a bit longer as one of the incisions had to go through the gallbladder incision. But normally not a problem just might add 5-10 minutes to the surgery itself.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
