Tips on what to expect after surgery

Recommended Posts

Surgery done on 7/9/09 and this is one thing to expect.

When you come out of the operation you will be very sore and very bloated. You will also be given a morphine (spelling) drip for pain. Here is what can happen since most of you will not have any solid food in you for at least 48hr beaware that the drip will make you sick and you will dry heave this is very painful and could mess with the band. So try to avoid it if you can.

Morphine is a drug that does not go well with a completely empty stomach.

Try something different for the pain. There will be pain but to be honest it is not as much as I had thought.

I really only had bad gas in my abs and this is most uncomfy the walking does help.

Good luck to you all and I will see you on the other side very soon.

Everyone's experience is different. Although I was definately bloated for over a week after surgery, since I have gallstones, this is nothing new to me. I definately had a bit of discomfort after surgery - and it was quite painful getting in/out of bed. I didn't have any reaction to any of the pain meds. The surgeon's instructions kept stressing to take the pain medicine (i was given hydrocodone) before the pain gets bad, which I did for 4 days. Mainly slept and got up to walk or eat - or rather, i should say drink. I'm a bit over 1 month post op, and fortunately have not vomited yet. I know I need to be prepared for that, but so far, so good....

Yes, I agree...everyone is different. I was not given a morphine drip (not all are!) and in fact didn't even need the drip my doc put in to bathe my surgical sites with a numbing agent (we removed that sucker ASAP! LOL)

Morphine, and drugs like Lortab, are also VERY constipating.

I wasn't ever even a little nauseated, although I did have 2mg of morphine post op before I could stop them.

We are all unique; docs all prefer different meds, etc.

If you want to know what your recovery will most likely be like, ask your doc. :frown: There are also pages of "surgery day stories" you can read through and you'll see they are all different.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
