Itching like Hives! Help Anyone!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I'm new to the board. I had my surgery on 6/30/09. I've been doing absolutely GREAT! I feel well, I've been doing my walking. A new symptom for me is I have what I feel are hives. My sides itch and I'm doing everything I can to avoid scratching. It started yesterday which is about 1-1/2 weeks out of surgery. I'm so nervous that I might be allergic to the band!! Has anyone at all had this itching and does it go away on its own? Of course, today is Friday night so I will have until Monday to fret over this and I'm really scared about it. Nothing hurts but my incisions are all really red, too. I WILL NOT SCRATCH! Help anyone?

Trish

It could just be dry skin . Remember you have just had an op, anaesthetic etc and these can affect your skin. Also you have had a major change in diet which also impacts on your skin.

let us know what the outcome is.

maybe you are allergic to the adhesive on the tapes on your incisions I was. After I had my gallbladder out my incisions were soo itchy due to the tape/glue.

If you can, take some benadryl. It should help. If it doesn't go away call your doc on Monday. The odds of you being allergic to the band (made of an inert plastic) are REALLY REALLY slim.

I had bad itching after my surgery. The anesthesia can do it sometimes but that was not my problem. I was allergic to the glue they used to close the incisions.

It lasted about 2 weeks but I took benedyl to help the symptoms. The itching gradually lessened and all is well now.

I had surgery oct 2007

So, don't scatch, take a soaky back in oatmeal, ask doc about denedryl and take care!

Soak newly healing incisions in a bath? Most people are told no tub baths, swimming pools, etc., until the incisions heal.

I was told no baths or swimming for 3 weeks. They basically scared me away from my friends pool and the idea of 'what my surgeon doesn't know won't hurt him' with a sneak swim. They told me that Water can enter the incision and cause an infection. This could cause the whole band to be removed.

So, talk w/your doc before you take a soak. I agree w/the benedryl. You bay wan to get some of the benedryl ointment to rub where you have hives, taking care not to put any on the incision.

Hope you feel better, soon!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
