Hi all, I went to my regular doctor for annual physical today and my blood work was normal. However she took my blood pressure several times and it was High 140/100 she said she didn't want to put me on BP meds yet, because I meet with the lap band center docs 7/15 (first visit) and to see if it will be high then. She said that if it is high she wants me on meds and wants to see me in september to recheck it. She also said she would be in touch with them regarding this. I have never had any BP issues before except during pregnancy when I was borderline pre eclampsia. I was curious to know if anyone else has had this happen to them and if it resolved without meds.? Is this a comordity? I am pass the 40 bmi and am more worried about my overall health. I REALLY dont want to have to be put on meds if I can help it. P/S she was totally on board about my LB decision and said she is glad that I am being pro active about my health.

Hello Eyezchu, Yes, HTN can be a comorbity. You may find it improved with wt loss. You are very young and I would advise you to keep a log of your bp for a week or so. Your doctor may allow you to come in to take it once a day for a week or so. Usually you do not have to wait long to do this. Maybe that would make you feel better about making a decision about meds? Good luck!~

If your weight is causing your high BP then losing will help it, but not all BP responds to weight loss. Time will tell, for you. And yes, (depends on insurance) usually BP that is NOT CONTROLLED by medication is a co-morbidity. If you just aren't taking meds, it doesn't count, again depending on ins.

And 140/100 is high esp for your age but maybe it was just a fluke...BP can be like that, if you're retaining Water, stressed, etc. However if it's still high in Sept, take the meds; high BP can really do damage and there are so many meds out there, you don't have to take one with a dreadful side effect. Hopefully as you lose it will get lower. Exercise can help, too!

Hi and Thanx for the responses, I spoke to my family and My aunt and uncle both take BP meds and started in or around their late thirties. Can HTN be genetic?? My Dad doesnt have it although he has really high colesteral that he trys to control.

Yes, HBP can be hereditary. If it's in your family, you will want to let your doc know this. High cholesterol can also me hereditary. My mom-in-law had high cholesterol, like 500+. They did an angiogram (sp) and the was little plaque in her arteries. My grandmother has HBP and my mother was just put on HBP meds. I was on HBP meds for about a year pre-op. But, with losing the weight from the pre-op diet, my BP started going down. The day of my surgery my surgeon told me to stop taking it. My BP is practiallt back to normal and I've only lost about 25 lbs, total. Ask the surgeon when you meet them if putting down HBP will help with getting the ins co to approve the surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
