What exactly is the pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm new and have not been banded. Haven't seen the dr. yet but attending seminar on Tues. I'll also be a self-pay...urghh.

I know that I have a fatty liver thru blood tests and have had an ultrasound. Since I know the fat layer can cause surgery issues I'd like to get started on a plan that will help shrink it. What is the pre-op diet? I have seen Optifast listed on many threads. I'm looking for something I can purchase from a store. Currently, I drink SlimFast shakes for Breakfast.< /p>

Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.:tongue_smilie:

You are safest and wisest to discuss this with your surgeon after the seminar on Tuesday. There seems to be a different liver shrink diet for every doctor. I'm sure your physician will be happy that you are "proactive" and want to get rolling on shrinking your unhealthy liver, so don't waste your money on a diet he may not approve.

In the interim if you just want to be healthier for your own sake, generally a low fat, low carb diet is best to help shrink the liver.

Well, I'm pretty sure that a LOW CARB diet is what shrinks the liver for the most part... And Slimfast shakes are FULL of sugar/carbs. Bad idea

So it's typically a low-carb, low-fat diet. The usual healthy stuff. And many surgeons require a one week (or longer) liquid diet prior to surgery.

Just make sure you tell your surgeon your concerns...he can either get you started right then, or allay your fears. Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
