Pre-Op Diet starts tomorrow

Recommended Posts

My 5 day (yes I am one of the lucky ones who doesn't have to do 2 weeks) diet starts tomorrow and I am sitting here obsessing about food. I am wondering if I could possibly have pizza, taco's, fried chicken and a hoagie for dinner cause it is going to be a long time if ever I get to eat them again. What is wrong with me???? It took me 7 months to get to this point and now I am questioning where I can really give up the food I love. My surgery date is 7/15, is this just a case of nerves (I hope).

My surgery date is 07/15 also! I started my pre-op diet today..and thank goodness I dont have to do 2 weeks, cause I am struggling getting through day 1  . It's hard when you have a family that is eating hamburgers and chips and you are having a slimfast shake! I too am obsessing about food, however, I am trying to keep in mind the new, smaller me that will hopefully come out of all of this. We can do it! Good luck!

Don't worry! First of all, you don't have to give up the food you love -- you just will enjoy it in smaller quantities. That is the beauty of the band.

I wish someone would have told me this before I had surgery b/c I was all stressed about getting in my "last meals" in ahead of time. . . After your surgery, when you are back on solid food, before your first fill, you are going to be able to eat pretty much just like you did before surgery. Of course, you shouldn't pig out, but I will say that I found it really reassuring to know that if I really was DYING for a bagel or something, I could eat it then -- or even have my band unfilled and eat it at any point later on. That said, I don't want to do that, so I eat sensibly. But it is comforting to know that I could if I really wanted to.

BTW, that post-surgery/pre-fill period is the time everyone calls "Bandster Hell" -- and most people either stop losing during that time (it's only about 2 weeks - - don't worry) or even gain a few pounds. Once you get your fill, that weight comes off pretty quickly.

Also, I am at my "sweet spot," restriction-wise and can eat a bit of thin crust pizza, tortilla chips, guacamole, probably could eat a taco (though a soft flour tortilla might not go down that well) and I'm sure I could eat fried chicken if I was so inclined. The hoagie wouldn't work for me though b/c the bread is too Gummy (tough to get down).

So, don't stress! This is a big change, but it's not like you'll never be able to eat anything you like again.

Congratulations on your decision! I hope you are as happy to be banded as I am. I feel like this is the best thing I've ever done for myself.

Best wishes,

Catherine

Thank you everyone for your most helpful responses. I guess I was just in panic mode. I am currently drinking an Atkins Advantage shake (Mocha Latte) and guess what it tastes pretty good. I know I have a rough trip ahead of me but with all of your support I am sure I will be just fine. Thats again everyone. Now on to my next worry SURGERY IN 5 DAYS

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
