Banded 07/07...needing to burp

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was banded 7/3/09 and it took a couple of days for me to be able to burp well. Now, it seems like I burp all the time, much more than I did pre-surgery. I do find though that if I need to burp but have trouble doing it that if I stand up it will usually happen. I'm trying to be really careful about not taking in too much air when I sip, but I guess I still do. I'm on my last day of Clear Liquids, I get to start drinkable yogurts tomorrow and full liquids on Sunday, so hopefully that won't change my ability to burp. I would check with the doc too, maybe he/she can give you some hints. Good Luck!

Hi Tish,

Thank you for responding. I called my doctor today and they told me to just keep walking, taking Gas-X Strips. I feel a burp try to emerge, but it seems to get stuck at where I think the band is and doesn't go anywhere. Everytime I drink anything it feels like it makes all the gas expand up to my diaphragm. So far, I have taken a Phazyme today and 3 Gas-X strips and I managed to be able to lie sort of on my left side for a short nap and relieve the pressure, but as soon as I got up, it was right there again. I just hope it passes. I am completely miserable.

Thanks! I was banded on the 7th as well and I am experiencing the same problems. I had a hernia repair and I am so bloated and gassee that I can't stand it. For the most part I feel pretty good, a bit soar of course but this gas thing is really a bummer. I'm taking the gasX-strips I'm so glad you guys mentioned it here I would have been out here trying to figure out what meet the liquids only guidelines.

I think I'm having spasms in the area beginning where the band is, up my esophagus to my throat and somehow the pain radiates to my brain. I thought it was gas, but now I'm beginning to wonder.

I'm having to take the pain killer to get them to subside whether I have had anything to drink or not. I'm able to get and keep fluids down without pain, but then I'll have spasms that are AWFUL.

I'll be calling the surgeons office again today to see if there is anyting to make it stop and if it is normal. I too wouldn't wish it on anyone. I'm now afraid that it's a perm. side effect of having the band and that I'll have to have it removed since I refuse to continue to feel this forever!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
