How long before "regular" food?

Recommended Posts

My post op diet was: week 1 Clear Liquids (which meant no Protein shakes) week 2 liquids (including blended cream Soups, etc) week 3 mushies week 4 mushies and soft foods week 5 regular food...

and I stuck to it. i learned my lesson the hard way during my preop diet.

As with many things with the band- "it depends on your dr". Are you just asking in general to see where your dr's rules fall in line with ours? Or do you not have that info. from your dr. yet? If you don't then you are going to want to call your dr. and find out what he wants you to do. I started solids three weeks post op per my dr.'s orders.

From Rutiglius' response on another post this is just curiosity. OF course no one should countermand his/her physician's orders for any anecdotal "evidence" read on this site.

I just couldn't in good consciense give info. on what I did in regards to solids without clarifying that it really is up to the dr. I feel that this site can be tricky because it appears as though some are seeking info. from fellow bandsters but they should really be asking their dr--and I mean specific medical questions- so I always like to clarify and put that disclaimer out there in good faith that we always need to check with our dr. when we have a medical question or protocal question.

I have the info...just curious about everyone else's "plan".

My plan: clear liquids day after surgery

liquids (Protein shakes, blended Soups, etc...) for 4 days

Mushies for 1 - 2 weeks (depending on progress)

soft foods for 1 week

regular foods by week 4 or 5.

My plan which seemed to me to be a default plan they hand to everyone is:

48 Hrs Post Op= clear liquids, broth, Water, tea,Crystal light, fruit juice/no pulp, sugar free popsicles

Rest of week 1= liquid now including Protein drink, apple sauce, sugar free pudding/jello/ and everything from the 48 hr phase.

week 2/3 = these are blended together but basically say mushie foods such as creamed Soups, etc slowly moving torward more mushie foods such as mashed potatoes, etc.

week 3/4= solid foods.. (cant wait honestly)

Hi All,

Just thought I would share what my MD said about food: Days 1-7 Clear liquids only, Days 8 & 9 Clear liquids + drinkable yogurts, Day 10-21 Clear liquids + drinkable yogurt + full liquids (instant Breakfast drinks, Soups, strained vegetable, meat or cream, vegetable juices strained & milk). My MD said to NEVER EAT MUSHIES and that after Day 21, to begin regular foods but to be sure to chew, chew, chew & chew. I saw Dr. Ariel Ortiz in MX. He said that the reason he recommends no mushies is that our bodies are designed to eat solid foods, but that after surgery our stomachs need to heal. He said that after following the 21 days religiously, we will be ready for solids. I guess we'll see! (I'm on day 6 of the clear liquids).

Tish

For me, I feel as though my program allows for a pretty quick progression.

The day of surgery and days 1-3 I was on clear liquids and Protein drinks. On days 4-7 I was allowed to add things like V8, yogurt, and Diet Splash. Days 8-22 allow me to eat things like deli meats, fish, canned tuna, refried Beans, cottage cheese, etc. On days 23-35 things such as chicken and pork (fork tender) can be added as well as cheeses and black Beans.< /p>

I wish I had your plan!

I cannot wait until tomorrow morning, since it will be technically 7 days(1 week) I can move to Mushies/Soft food phase. I have been dreaming of eating some refried beans/w cheese and salsa for like the last 3 days.... Biding my time....:smile2:....

Have any of you guys had any luck with Pita chips or anything like that? I know chips are not very good for you but I was thinking some Trader Joe's Pita chips wouldn't be that bad.. or maybe something made with corn or wheat>?:)

TheArchitects...I'd skip the chips for now; they may be a slider but they aren't a mushie. Give yourself a chance to heal; you have a more generous post op diet than a lot of us, so I know you can hang in there! They won't quit making chips between now and the time you're finally cleared for take off! :smile2:

You're right. I will behave myself. I just need to get my mind off it, maybe I will go play some video games.

Oddly refrieds were the "food" I longed for too. I even got a can of them out of the panty and sat and CRIED over them. How sad is that!?! LOL

You'll do marvelously! :smile2:

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
