Recommended Posts

im not sure where to post this... but i hope someone is able to help me. I am supposed to have a CPAP machine for odstructive sleep apnea. my insurance has denied me for getting it, because i do not have medical equiptment coverage. i was wondering what everyone else in this situation has done, and what it costs to just purchase one. I was looking online and i came across a few of them for under 300.00... but im not sure what constitutes a good one.... i still have my mask and tubing from my sleep study, so i dont need that. just the machine itself...

I hope there's someone on this site who doesn't need theirs anymore that can send it to you. Please someone that doesn't need a machine anymore and has one, please contact this fellow bandster and help them out. I don't have one, or else I would.

I love my band and my new flat tummy!

Hey Riane:

You might want to search on the NSV threads to see if someone says they got to come off of their cpap machines because they probably could give you theirs if they don't need it anymore.

Good luck finding a machine. I hope someone gives you one.

Another option may be to rent one. Depending on the severity of your OSA you may see a rapid improvement after surgery and not need the machine for all that long.

Hey Cathy! Thanks for replying... I was going to look into renting one.. but the company that works with my Drs office, charges an arm and a leg... i think it would be cheaper for me in the long run to just purchase one. (or get a hand-me-down one!! )

Okay, Riane, I am a firm believe in Ebay! You can buy anything on Ebay. I just did a search for "CPAP" and in among all the CPAP supplies, there is a brand new machine for $129. I didn't look through all the offerings but there is that option. It's a "buy it now" which, if you aren't into Ebay, means you don't have to bid on it...you just get to buy it.

I have an issue... i spoke to the woman from my doctors office, because i wanted to purchase a CPAP machine outright instead of going through the medical supply company their office uses because she wanted to charge me and arm and leg... she said that i couldnt purchase it online like i had wanted to because it needed to be programed by a respitory therapist... is there anyway to get around this? and does anyone know what this means.. im lost for what to do next, and feeling hopeless!! grr..

My doctor's office has a program where they accept machines from people who don't need them any longer to make available to people who don't have insurance to cover them. Perhaps there is someone in our community who will do that!

My husband has a CPap ... It is adjustable for the pressure for him specifically, so they figured out what his "sleep number" lol was for him... #11 so what ever machine you find it needs to be adjustable in pressure, find out what the number is you need to use, and if you cannot program it yourself bring it to someone who can help you. Good luck in your search, it has helped my husband a lot.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
