Dealing with unpleasant side effects

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else started experiencing unpleasant side effects of weight loss? My hair has started falling out and I've got horrible bad breath now! :) I've read that both can be side effects of rapid weight loss, but I'm not sure how to deal with them! Any suggestions?

I'm taking Biotin and Vitamin D to hopefully help my hair (but I was taking that before it starting falling out), and I'm using Listerine strips between teeth brushings. Any other ideas are greatly appreciated!

TIA!

hi spidey,

i found whenever my hair started falling out, i wasn't taking in enough Protein. the Biotin didnt help me (altho' i have heard others where it did help them.)

whenever my hair started falling out i started taking Protein shakes and/or the Protein bullets. it stopped the hair issue immediately.

hope this helps

Some people say not enough fat in the diet or not enough Protein. I think it is just something that happens 3-5 months after surgery. Happened to me 4 months out. Subsided after a couple of months. Came back in thicker than b/4 (seems like it anyway). I, too, took Biotin and Vit E but to no avail. I faithfully ingested enough fats and at least 75gr of protein/daily. Try not to worry about it. My doc says he has never had a patient that needed a wig!

Thanks for the advice! I've had it happen before when I was on WW and lost a lot of weight. I'm doing pretty well with my Protein, but maybe I should start checking my fat intake.

The bad breath comes from your body being in ketosis. I've never had the "bad" breath, but I had a sweet taste in my mouth all the time back when I lost a bunch of weight real fast on MediFast. Besides adding in some carbs to your diet to bring you back out of ketosis, the best thing I know to do is drink more Water. Being dehydrated seems to make it worse. And use alcohol-free mouthwash/breath treatments for the same reason.

As for your hair, I've had that happen as well, no matter how much Biotin I took. My doc told me it's your body's natural reaction to stress, in this case what it perceives to be starvation. Your hair will grow back, but it might some time. But just to be on the safe side, have your doc run some tests. As I found out a little too late, hypothyroidism can cause Hair loss as well!

Best wishes to you!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
