Port discomfort after eating? Freaking out.

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I went out for brunch and had some Pasta. Not crazy or anything out of the ordinary. About 20 minutes after eating I was walking in Target and felt a little discomfort at my port site. I would take a deep breath and I felt a little pressure at the site. I was imagining a large amount of food trying to push through the stoma but couldn't wait to leave just to sit down. Once in line to purchase items it just diappeared and no discomfort. Have any of you experienced this? what was it? I was freaking out that my band slipped or something and it was pulling at the port. ARGH!! once I let my imagination go there is no going back. I tried searching the threads here to no avail. Any advice or experiences welcomed.:)

What you were imagining is probably exactly what was happening....a large blob of Pasta working its way through your stoma. Sometimes, this can be very painful...sometimes, it feels more like pressure. You were lucky this time.

I sometimes have a little pain around my port site also. When I asked the nurse about it, she just said the muscles that the port is attached to are moving and sometimes it will cause a dull pain. I knew the pain was too low to be something wrong with the stoma.

You were banded a month ago and ate Pasta? Probably not a good idea. But what's done is done. If I've eaten a LOT of food my port hurts, just like you described. I think it is the lap band's way of saying to not do that anymore.

My husband was banded 11 months ago and has pain on the port side after eating. The doc ordered an ultrasound to check his galbladder just in case.... You might want to call the doc's office to see what they say.

(He will have his test next week).

I have the same feeling when I eat more than usual or drink a lot of Water in a short time. My Dr also told me that as your stomach shrinks, there is less room so I would feel the stomach muscles working and moving near my port. My port is stapled to my stomach. I know the new ports are not.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
