So to those out there who have gone through this, how did you establish your goals in terms of weight loss, and excercise. I just picked a random number of what I'd like to weigh based on a point in my life in which I was happy with my figure. I'm not certain that it's the best way to go about this, as I was actually really unhealthy at the time. Also, any advice on having a scale and how frequent you should weigh yourself? I find myself obsessing to see if I've lost weight, not celebrating that I've made an accomplishment, but rather not really trusting the scale that there is any way that I could have lost "x." I've had very little input from my doctor at this point.

Also, what are realistic goals for excercise? I had mentioned to my family that I had joined a group activity with a goal of walking "x" miles by a certain day, and my dad commented on the fact that it was too low of a goal.

What are realistic goals, or rather how do you go about setting them?

Poppet,

Your goals will have to be what ever works for you. For some, they need to see the whole picture and set a goal for their entire weight loss. That's great, but sometimes it's just too overwhelming. I have my total goal set on my signature, but I've added a mini goal to work towards in the short term. My nutritionist set a goal of 164 for me, but of course I want a lower goal, so I set it at 148. Which ever it is, it has to be one that works for you. Some people will work in 10 pound increments. They get the first 10 lost, then work on the second. Try one and see how it works. If it doesn't work for you, change it. Remember, it's your goal and weight loss, not your families or friends.

Same thing for exercise. I really need to set that goal too because it's a really weak spot for me. I will have to set a serious exercise goal as soon as I'm through healing. I'm already doing some stuff, but I will have to get serious and actually work a goal.

I'm sure there are others that will give you great advise on this subject. I've just started my journey and there are years of experience here. The best to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
