Band ruptured

Recommended Posts

I had my band surgery two years ago and lost 200lbs in one year. I recently have felt a difference in the band. I could tell something was different. I went to the doctor and after a visit he set me up with a fluroscope. It was discovered that the actual band has ruptured. He said he has never seen anything like that. I am looking at repeating the whole surgery over again because the whole band has to be replaced. Is there anyone who has had their band ruptured and if you have did your insurance pay for it?

When you say ruptured do you mean the inner tubing that receives the fill? When you felt that something was different did you feel less restriction? I hope that you get this problem resolved. I am sure someone on here has had to have their band removed and replaced and can tell you if insurance covers it. But I am sure each insurance is different. You have done so well. Congratulations. And good luck to you with this problem.

My dr told me that if the insurance approved it in the first place, they should cover anything pertaiing to it.

I had to have a revision and they paid for it.

I too am not sure what you mean by ruptured. the way you say you could feel something different but do not say you were sick, in pain or any sort of emergency makes me think the balloon has ruptured or similar?

My surgeon who is one of the band's pioneers warns his patients to expect that this will occur some time in the future, that the band WONT last forever in our bodies, but 2 years isnt very long, he's meaning more like 20 years.

During my time on here, I've heard of various leaks and similar, and a couple of cases of the band coming undone.

Nobody wants extra surgery, what a nuisance for you but I guess you can be thankful its not erosion or actual damage to your body.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
