Would you convert to Bypass if...

If your band was removed and you couldn't get a new one

  1. 1. If your band was removed and you couldn't get a new one

    • Would you allow your doctor to perform a bypass during removal?

    • Would you consider a bypass in the future?

    • Would you just go bandless and be on your own?

    • Could you afford another Band surgery if that's an option?

Yes I would most cetainly have the bypass if my band were removed.

At the point I am at now I kind of wish I had the bypass to begin with.

I answered that I would consider the gastric bypass.

I'll be honest and say that I didn't seriously consider it the first time around, after I read about the risks involved. I'd revisit it, have a second look at the pros and cons, etc.

But if the risks are as high as I've read (albiet briefly), I love my family too much to chance it. I'd rather Jaz have an overweight Mum, than no Mum at all...

I would not have the by-pass. ever. Even when I was very sick this last winter I wouldn't have had the by-pass.

I haven't lost weight, but well, I'm not dead either.

Im scared to be fat agian well im still considerd to be fat right now but never agian do i want to be flirting with the 300's agian. If i lost my band i would get the bypass in a heartbeat.

I have 2 friends that have had it done one of my friends got pregnate too soon and her baby came out tiny and with complacations.

I know the fisk of a gastric bypass but im willing to take it to be small. Somtimes i am sad that i have such a slow wieght loss. I want to be small so quickly.

Kim, you reminded me of something that the head nurse said during the gastric bypass orientation I attended. She said flat out "you will need an abortion if you get pregnant after the bypass". She said the baby would be malnourished. Yikes! I don't care what your beliefs are about the "A" word - that would be a no-win situation.

Would I have the bypass? I a word Noooooooooooo! I have 3 friends who have had the bypass and 1 has gained all the weight back after 4 years and Excess skin removal with major complications, 1 has begun to gain the weight back after 2 1/2 years and the 3rd one is just now 1 year post surgery. She lost 153 lbs. in 9 months and has to fold her stomach in half to put her pants on because her weight loss was so rapid that her skin is empty, bless her heart, she has aged 10 years. She is completley unfamiliar with the band. These results are heartbreaking and very common. These poor ladies wanted what we all want-to fit in and be thin without the bondage of excess weight and the side effects of obesity. Please research all of your options and make your decision based on the facts that you gather and not on mine or anyone elses opinion. The very best to you whatever decision you make. God bless you dear.

As for me... I am a YES. I would do anything possible to keep this weight off. I would do anything possible to not be that big again. I would never want to be as depressed and misreble as I was. So yes, I would do it. No bones about it, if it was my only chance.

The band can be taken out--not so the bypass. There's no going back.

Anyone thinking about the bypass should read Jessica's story...

Hey Kare, thanks for providing that link. It took me ages to read the whole thing .. but OMG, the poor lady :) It definitely makes me grateful for the option of banding.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
