Where's the mayo?

Recommended Posts

I used to buy fat-free Mayonnaise all the time. Both Kraft and Best Foods (Hellman's in the East) made varieties I used. But in the past few months, I haven't seen it at any of the supermarkets I visit. Out here, we have Ralphs (Kroeger), Vons (Safeway), and Albertsons (SuperValu). I've also looked at a couple of Super Walmarts and big Targets. We have some big ethnics market chains that don't carry it, and neither does Trader Joe's, which I didn't expect to carry it.

Anyone see it anywhere? I do know a place where I can buy individual packets for the fat-free mayo, like you'd get at a deli, but those are hard to cook with.

Did you try looking online? I know they have the light one here in WA, but I haven't looked for the fat free one? I just used regular but in moderation...usually only a thin film of it on my "sandwiches" or a small spoonful to make a dressing :)

Okay, you made me curious. Go to www.amazon.com and search fat free mayo. They carry more than one. And I saw something there that has roused my curiosity even further. Have you ever heard of Walden Farms products? I buy a chocolate sauce they make that is CALORIE FREE. I use it to dip apple slices in when I feel the need for a treat (that just happens to be absolutely guilt-free). Well, they make a fat free, sugar free, CALORIE FREE Mayonnaise. If anybody gets this and tries it, please pass on a "review". I'm curious.

Kraft mayo with Olive oil.... It has a green lid. Has half the fat of regular mayo so it has 4 grams. I love it, I don't abuse it. but it really gives a nice flavor beats the low fat variety, and I believe it has the same amount of fat as the lowfat version. I made deviled eggs for 4th of july bbq yesterday and everyone was raving about the great flavor, they didn't know what I did that made it so special.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I did see where I could get Krafts online through its Web site, but it's over $6 a jar, plus shipping. I have not had the Waldens mayo. It's available at a store I go to. I wanted something that the whole family could use.

But I did a little more looking this weekend and found that Walmart has Best Foods (Hellman's) Low Fat mayo. It has 1g of fat and 15 calories per tablespoon. I believe this is what the Kraft fat-free was, although it had no fat. It also makes a light mayo that has about half the calories, but it's still pretty hefty, calorie-wise. I can live with 1g of fat. Haven't tasted it yet. I intend to use it in tuna or chicken salad.

Thanks again for all your suggestions. :(

HappyHomeCC. I too LOVE the mayo with the olive oil. I hate artificial anything, and going fat free, sugar free isn't an option for me. The olive oil solved this problem for me. I have to keep a little bit of healthy fats in my diet or my skin looks just horrid! Olive oil actually helps reduce cholesterol, so I'm fine with it. I am also concerned about maximizing my nutrition. Many Vitamins (A, D, E, and K) are fat soluable, and are only absorbed in the presence of fats. So I feel a little is doing me a favor, as long as it's the right kind, and used in moderation. I won't touch margarine!!!!

I agree with you aubrie. I bought the Isopure natural vs Zero Carb version with splenda etc. I am not hip on the chemical sugars etc. I use butter too. I try to use more chicken broth to cook with for the moisture that butter provides. Or I use olive oil. To me the fat free stuff is not palatable... did you see the butter mixed with olive oil to make it spreadable? I haven't tried it yet. I want to get in the land of Moderation and I would like to cut out the majority of the red meat... heck meat in general if I could but the family will not go for it ;o) I will use the sugar free products during my post op diet thought until I heal and can eat. Have you tried Stevia? I bought a liquid with Valencia orange flavor. 8 Drops in a Water bottle gives it a nice flavor. I have been having that so that I do not feel the need to convert to crystal light. there are a lot of flavors to choose from and you can add them to coffee or tea, or just use a plain one as a sweetner.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
