How do you get through Head Hungry at Holidays!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 6/25/09. I feel great. I am still on liquids until at least 7/6. I am dreading this weekend and 4th of July BBQ's. I plan on bringing the liquids I can have but how do you distract yourself and fight the urge??

I have an unhealthy fear of puking....as in flat out phobia. That alone keeps me at bay.

Grandma, I had my surgery last week, but had a horrible post-surgery episode. I'm so "bloated" and "full" from my issue that I really seriously doubt 'head hunger' is going to make an appearance.

Since it's so early, my guess is you'll do just fine this weekend.

Like someone said, a healthy fear of puking doesn't hurt!

Best of luck to you!

You might also throw in fear of harming your healing band site etc. (Many are already familiar with this litany! LOL) When you eat it causes peristalsis and your stomach churns. The churning action of your stomach CAN cause a slip or a tear in your sutures. So aside from fear of puking, don't eat because you might MIGHT do your band site some damage.

Follow your post op diet scrupulously. If you are afraid you'll indulge, sit this holiday out. Really. :tongue2: You want the best band experience possible; there will be other barbecues.

Ugh I was banded right before Memorial Day... there must've been a week of bar-b-ques & yummy looking food!

I was in a lot of pain after my surgery so to me, being in the company of others was satisfying enough. I'd definitely bring my own food to eat [or drink].

Thanks for all your encouragement!

Yesterday was a bad day, I didn't drink enough liquids so I was feeling hungry. Dr. added cream Soup as long as I strain all the bits out. That helped a lot, I am no longer hungry and I think I will be fine, I don't want to do any damage.

Another thing to remember, as a dear friend from WW once told me: Holidays are about being with friends and family, people we love. If I need food to "get through it", I don't go. If I can go and follow my "diet" and laugh and love and enjoy the group, I do that. There'll always be another hot dog, another burger, another ham or turkey. But the people I love...are worth everything.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
