Surgery date for JULY 15th!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I just got the call from my doctor's office...pre-op July 8th and surgery set for July 15th. I am sooo excited. I do have some questions maybe some of you can help me with.

1) What is a good Protein Shake?

2) Did you use anything to help diminish your scars? and if so, what did you use?

3) The gas pain has me worried. That is one of the biggest after-effects of the surgery from what I can tell from reading on this site..what works the best??

4) What can I expect the day of surgery as far as afterward...will I want to sleep all day?

5) How are your emotions  in the weeks following the surgery?

Any insight you can provide would be appreciated!! And if any others are getting banded that day or around that day..please contact me so maybe we can be 'buddy's'.

Thanks!

1) What is a good Protein shake?

Honestly, they are all pretty disgusting! I haven't found one that I like, but you'll probably get a few recommendations from others.

2) Did you use anything to help diminish your scars? and if so, what did you use?

Yes -- I started out with Mederma (didn't do anything as far as I can tell), then used Vitamin E -- but then a friend recommended Epidermis to me, and it's been great. There are photos of my scars and a link to the Epidermis site on my blog somewhere (you can just Google Epidermis to find it as well-- I get the square that costs $40-something and cut it into small pieces).

3) The gas pain has me worried. That is one of the biggest after-effects of the surgery from what I can tell from reading on this site..what works the best??

Walking around after surgery seems to help. Other than that, I took some gas medicine that my doctor gave me.

4) What can I expect the day of surgery as far as afterward...will I want to sleep all day?

You'll want to relax and take it easy and have the option of napping on and off. Maybe rent a few movies to tide you over.

5) How are your emotions eek.gif in the weeks following the surgery?

Great! I was very happy that it went so well and wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The full liquid diet was a breeze after having to do Clear liquids, and the 2 weeks of that, and the 2 weeks of mushies just flew by.

I hope that helps! Congratulations on your surgery date! :tongue2:

Catherine

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
